My T5 lights are 5 inches above the top of the tank and water level is an inch below the top of the tank so anywhere between 5-7 inches above the tank should be good

Not sure about your first question could you clarify please?

Personally the schedule is what works best for you my blues are on all day (12 hrs 7-7) my day lights come on at 11 and go off at 6pm

2 actinic
2 blue
2 pink

It also depends on what coral you have mine are all softies so lighting is more forgiving as I don't deal with hard or sips coral I can't help with the lighting choices there

My lights are 8-10 inches AWL, combo of 4 ati blue plus, 2 actinic, 2 coral plus. Running time is 8 hours for 6 bulbs and 12 hours for the other 2 (blue plus). XHO are controlled by profilux via reefbrite dimer control, 12 hours on and 12 hours moon phase variable. My tank is sps only with a small amount of other corals.
