The are definitely a problem. When we were diving in Cozumel last year the DMs were spearing them and feeding them to the triggers. They are hoping that eventually the triggers will develop a taste for them and start preying on live lion fish.

Were they an accidental release or were they released on purpose or by reefers who could or would no longer look after them?

This was not accidental. These fish were released into an echosystem where they have no natural predators and they are decimating the native fish populations. These ecosystems are all intricately connected and the consequences could be devistatating.
