Red face Refugium

Hello all
Setting up a larger sump and adding a refugium with carib sea mineral mud.
Can you just have the mud or do you need a fine sand substrate ontop?
Any help would be great

I thought the whole miracle mud thing died out a few years ago..I can't say I've heard of anyone actually using it lately. Pretty sure most people just decided it was a bag of dirt and went with some revision of sand bed.

For years I kept what I refer to as a remote deep sand bed. I had 6" of sand inside a good size tupperware container that I sat inside my sump. That way, if I ever wanted to pull out the DSB, it was easy and not a PITA. When I sold off that tank, taking out the DSB was easy as pie.

Thanks for the input
Gonna start out with it bare and thow some live rock and chaeto in there and see how it goes.
Saw some mangrove plants at the lfs got me thinking of making a seperate tank in a living room and having them grow out into the room. I know they are slow growers but a small shallow lagoon would be cool.
