The way I look at it .... in the tropics, daylight is darn near perfectly 12 hours any day of the year. So my tanks are lights on for 12, lights off for 12.

50g: halides for 12 hours
75g: halides for 10 hours, VHO for 12 (currently no VHO thanks to the zap!, however, but will return to the 12 hour cycle when I have time to look at it)
20g: halide for 10 hours, no dusk or dawn, but gets residual light from other tanks/plant stands/etc.

But you already knew all this, so I'm just wasting electrons by typing it in.

I have my actinics on from 6:30 am till 9 pm (stays on longer as my wifes parot really likes the actinics)
my 175 W Turtle basking light from 6:45 to 8:15 pm
2 40 W flourescent rom 8:00am till 8:30 PM
my 1000W MH freshwater grow light 08:00 am to 5:30PM
2 110 W VHO from 08:30 am till 07:30 PM
175W Mh from 08:30 till 08:00
and
Ok this may sound stupid but...
on full moon nights I leave the actinics on all night.

If you save SAD...seasonal affected disorder....a couple days of sun tanning in my basement wil fix that up

Both tanks run a 12 hour cycle, gradual increase/decrease. A small red night-lite in 60g canopy and a conveniently located streetlight outside gives the 90g a "simulated" moonlight glow...
I read somewhere that "strange people" become more active during the full moon cycle. Fortunately Ross has dismissed that theory...
I wonder if the city would consider synchronizing that street light with moon cycles :? I'm afraid to ask.
I think I know where you're goin' with this one so I'm probably not included in the 12 required responses...
