Pods eating my poor sand star

I discovered a group of about 30 pods feasting on my poor sand star in my refugium. I thought the sand star was dead , took it out and it's still moving but most of the legs are eaten. Luckily, the centre of the heart has not been eaten yet. I have transferred him into the seahorse tank.

1. Will he ever grow back ? sob.. sob...
2. How do you feed those ferocious pods ?

I suspect that the pods know something you don't. Likely the star is dying and the pods are just doing what they do....cleaning up.
