Tank price and weight

Hi there,

My friend has this old fish tank lying around that I wanted to purchase for my mom's goldfish but I don't know how much I should offer them for it.

It is a custom made tank, the dimensions are 36"L x 24"W x 36"H. Its a glass aquarium and its probably about 10 years old. I don't think it had a light or anything though. How much do you think is a fair amount for the tank? It is very clean and has been gathering dust for about 5 years now. Also, how much do you think this puppy weighs? 300lbs?

My 48x24x30 weighs a good 250 lbs. It was moved up a flight of stairs and onto my stand by two people. Glass thickness is 1/2".

36" is a freakin' high tank. I cannot touch my 4" sand bed now that my canopy is on my tank. I hope your mom never needs to touch the bottom of the tank.

One other problem for you to think about. If tank's sit empty then the silicone tends to dry out. If it's been sitting for that long you may rethink that. Anyway If it were me I would check out the tank first. If the silicone still feel's VERY soft then I my self would offer them $50 to $100.

Goldfish grow to be a foot long and can live for 10+ years if properly cared for. I don't think a 36" long tank will do the job for them, especially if there are more than three of them. A much better choice is a tank at least 5' long, 2' wide and 18" high.

You must not have seen real goldfish Jack!! I fully agree with Bev on this. The palce I eat lunch at beside the office has a 240g tank with about 6 goldfish. Largest is about 15 inches.

Not in the least, Jack.

You're used to seeing goldfish in bowls - the cruelest way to kill any fish. GF are the most abused fish in N. America because they are often the first fish people want to keep because they are so "easy" to keep, and, unfortunately, so easy to flush when they die after a month or two

Except for super fancy GF, that can cost hundreds of dollars, GF are cheap as dirt and are most often treated that way. Only people who've taken the time to be informed about GF know of their longevity and adult size, and that's not very many people, ime.

Gold fish are also a very dirty fish which require a adnormaly large amount of gall/fish but are seldom give it.

the problem is most people refer to "commets" as goldfish. Comets stay small and are cheep.

Steve, my daughter has a "comet" that is about 7 inches long. It lives in the pond in her yard.
