That's an interesting idea. I imagine with pellets it probably wouldn't even chop them up. I'm going to give it a try simply by throwing some pellets in there at feeding time today.

Yes it will take 4-6 weeks for them to work again if you get new ones. Just rinse them really well in old tank water until they don't stink anymore. They'll be back to life in no time.
