But I have the Deltec MCE600, and I have to say... best damn skimmer I ever bought. Pulls more out of the tank than my in-sump turbofloter in the old system...

Better still to have the water level elevated above the main tank. Split the return line from the pump, run some of it into the fuge, then run the overflow (drilled into the side) into the main tank....

I have no experience with cucumbers, but I can vouch for a long break in period for skimmers. It can take anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks to start producing a decent load of skimmate.
