coral depth

There's a huge range depending on the type of coral, its geographical location, competition encountered by potentially more aggressive coral species, etc. If you're interested in this in an attempt...

Just an FYI, using fans to cool the air temperature in your hood (eg. blowing fans at your reflector or lamp) as opposed to using fans blowing onto the water's surface to effectively control temp is...

whare in town should I take my tanks to get them drilled

The Glass Smith (on Tennyson sp.?) or Seastar. Neither of them will guarantee the work they do, but I've had both of them drill tanks and never had a problem. The only problem with Glass Smith is...

Ummm...I call bull$hit on Steve's comment about diffusing MH lighting. Steve, this is one of those cases where your lack of experience in reefkeeping and minimal "research" being espoused as if it is...

painting back wall of tank

Just use a can of enamel or acrylic spray paint. Make sure the glass is nice and clean (use rubbing alcohol to remove any residue and make sure you keep the area you're going to be painting in clean...

Stand is finaly done

A standpipe inside the overflow box negates any possibility that more than say 5 gallons of water would ever drain out of the main tank (save for both the overflow box and the stand pipe or bulkhead...

Overflow

But yes an angled overflow does look nicer than a square one in a larger tank. I also think that Darren should use gray acrylic rather than black for the overflow box -- it'll blend in a little...

Overflow

The biggest problem with an angled overflow box coupled with a Durso stand pipe is that for the overflow to leave sufficient room for all of the PVC fittings (and room to get your hand in there) you...

PVC fittings

You'll have to explain the pics, maybe I'm stoopid today, but I can't figure out what it is that you intend to do with those.

And make sure that you do a really good job of making sure that the male threads on the stand pipe and the female threads in the bulkhead remain clean. If you get even a couple of grains of sand in...

Durso construction

Why didn't you just use a Stockman overflow? You would have been able to use the larger pipe size without any problems.

Did you find some flexible PVC when you bought your fittings?

Scary thing to come home to

Plastic cable ties for aquascaping

My only concern about using plastic cable ties in a reef tank is that they're ASS-UGLY.
But sure, the black ones are UV resistant and a little less ASS-UGLY than the white ones.

Mag7's as powerheads.

Even if the pumps were above the water level, as long as both the intake pipes and outlet pipes remain submerged after an initial priming, water would remain in the line. Thus, in the event of a...

I think it costs more at Home Depot than it does at Van Isle. Not that the tubing costs very much but it might be as much as $.50/ft cheaper at VanIsle.
