Maybe I missed it in your post, is your tank fish only? I don't think I'd hook a skimmer up to a copper treatment tank that would be used on a reef system.

Sorry for the losses, but give it up... wrong! Move forward, get the bigger tank that you've wanted, more water volume is going to help enormously with the monster anemones that you are growing....

Sponges are some of the best filtering things there are, that one looks cool. I have some in other colors in my sump. IMO keep it and just see what it does.
