Probably because that's the first thing everybody try and it does not work. When ever I get cyano, I get it where I have the most flow in my tank, and have absolutely zero where the flow is gentle....

It's not even a question of flow, as the biofilm also build up on the pumps where the flow is highest. It's just a matter of carefull adjustment of dosing until things stabilize.

the problem is that you added fish and those fish were probably carrier or contaminated with something nasty.

Also if you added a lot of fish in one shot, it might have created an ammonia peak...
