I would suggest also that your cal is a bit on the hi side relative to your alk levels. Let it come down a bit and you will find it easyer to maintain the alk level. At 490 cal your Dkh when balanced...

Yes it's exactly how they behave. In fact it is quite normal if he disappears for about 3 weeks. Mine did this too and then he will start to venture out a little at a time.

Also you can feed a healthy dose of mysis right before you power your skimmer back up. It will kill all the bubbles for a bit then they will return gradually.

When I use it i do a big water change then I just dial the skimmer back as far as it will go. If its not enough then raising it up will help too. Then I just let it keep filling up the skimmer cup...

I would bet its oxygen related. Ammonia just cant form that fast and high nitrates would affect your corals alot sooner than your fish.
