Thanks for all the responses. I have the red macro because it is nicer to look at, the urchin likes it and it outcompetes the chaeto so likely good for nutrient export. There isn't much flow, but I'm...

Bassman, I might try that, though I would be surprised if the light weren't enough. It's 18W of 6700K light over about 1-1.5 gallons of water in the fuge area.

Dale, my intent was that the macro...

Fertilizing macroalgae

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice on growing macroalgae faster. I have a small refugium in the sump with plenty of 6700k light on a reverse lighting cycle(picture below). When I transferred to the...

Here's a full tank shot after the move (lighting is temporary). Still looking for opinions on whether the urchin would be better in the refugium or the main tank. Also ideas on a second...

Tank transfer

It's finally running! I transferred all the livestock and fixed up the sump last night. Found my pom pom crab in the process--glad he's still alive, but I wish he would come out once in a while.

I...

Surface viewing box

Keri,

Ocean Aquatics sells these--might be the same one that DrsFosterSmith has. I didn't find it on their website, so you might have to call them. It's sure to be cheaper than cross-border...

Update

Finally, saltwater in the tank! I ripped apart the return plumbing and redid it. Much better now with no leaks. The only issue is the swing check valve--when I cut power to the return pump the flap...

Rona silicone

Hi all,

Just noticed today that Rona's store brand silicone claims to be safe for aquarium use, unlike many of the GE products. They have clear but I didn't see any black. About $4 for a 300 mL...

I think I see what you mean. The wood brace at the top of the trim should hold, but with that much pressure you might see some deflection at the bottom of the trim. And it wouldn't take much...

Why not combine smaller glass braces with the wood braces you describe? The dowels will only hold the braces up, not resist pulling apart. I don't think glue on wood will hold up as well as silicone...

Leak test

First leak test tonight. The return plumbing is pretty leaky--I used a few pieces of plumbing intended for sprinklers that seem not to be a perfect fit with the rest of the 3/4" PVC. It's glued well...

LF sump

Hi,

Hoping someone might have a little tank for a sump or know where to get one to fit my limited space. The space available is 19.5" long x 9.5" wide x about 14" high. Could go higher but access...

Traded in the Eheim 1048 for a 1250, which is just right at 300GPH. Still need a swing check valve for 3/4" PVC (thread or slip) if anyone knows where to get one...

Slow progress on the stand, but...

Coralife makes 10w and 20w 50/50 CF. Don't know where to get them locally. King Ed has some screw-type CF. Not so great for growing algae, but nicer to look at.
