I'm no expert but I'd say that coral you need ID'd is either a devil's hand or finger leather. Nice pics, I can never get good close-ups of my stuff. :smile:

Do you have a reef crew yet? If you have live rock you should be able to support some crabs, snails and shrimp. I find them just as exitint to watch as my fish. I would wait on the fish any way -IMO....

I have found that using a turkey baister to do the boiling water method workes very well. It also alows you to suck the remains out after they are scorched. :evil:

He is quite the pig actually. When I use the turkey baister to feed the fish he'll swim right up to it and pick the food right out of it with his long nose.

That is a "Shaving Brush" culerpa. You can see why they call it that. Very cool form of algea, it actually changes its shade of green depending on the nutrient content in my water, kind of an NO3...

Dido, glad to see that you can still find some time for the hobby. I've had some bad luck in the past with levels crashing and large losses but nothing so severe.

I'm thinking of taking the balast to a place called Qick Grow here in Calgary. They have these identical balasts, maybe we take a peek at one's insides to help find a problem.

We did try some switching around. In every scenario my setup fired right away and Rich's didn't. It is a balast problem that we will have to fix. :neutral:

How is the contact in your socket? Mine looked pretty shiney so I didn't bother sanding it but it could help.

I haven't experienced anything so extream as in your case, but its sure helpful to know what the possible symptoms are of bad salt mix.
