That would be a mangrove. Most people use Chaetomorpha in their sumps. You could probably get a chunk from some locals, or even some of the stores. Cheap cheap, and efficient at exporting nutrients.

I prefer LPS for their movement, as others have said. But the challenge of taking a browned out SPS frag/colony and seeing how it changes is pretty cool to me. That's currently where I'm at: LPS...

I definitely would not try cutting away. I think about the best thing you can do is give it some really low flow, low light, and feed it intentionally every few days until you see it perking up again.
