You Islanders have all the fun!

For felt, hot water, heavy duty cycle, no bleach.

Switched to mesh. Hand wash and hang to dry.

Color is a matter of personal taste, and there are as many opinions about LED combinations as there are builds. I like the look of 2:1 royal blue to neutral white. No need to add any red or green...

Since you have a yellow coral that's maintained it's color I'd agree it's likely the coral and not your tank.

Lots of yellow SPS on the coast, maybe the prairie reefers are stingy with their nice...

Yellow will turn green with high nutrients or low light. You will likely need undetectable nutrients levels to have true yellow. How are your nitrates? I don't think iron will be an issue unless you...

Yes, and when I say additives I mean trace elements. Remember to test calcium and alkalinity regularly. Even with soft corals, the coraline algae may consume enough of these elements to require...

Corals don't "need" iodine additives, or any other additives. Your tank will do just fine with water changes only. The additives can be used to "tweak" color etc. Always observe when adding anything...

"Base" rock to me is the petrified rock that is as hard as glass and about as impervious. I still have some in my garden from my first tank  Dry rock like Marco rocks is soft and porous, and...

I suspect the anoxic zone begins much closer to the surface. IMO the bacteria living in the top layer of the rock would use up the oxygen very quickly. I've always had 0 nitrates with my porous,...

So you're saying the de-nitrification is taking place on the surface of the rock? I've never heard of this, I always thought the anoxic zones where inside the rock. Can you point us to references for...

I mean the structure of the rock itself, not that it necessarily has more passageways etc... though this is important as well IMO. Water needs to be able to penetrate the rock in order for it to...

The type of rock makes all the difference. You want a nice light, porous rock. Heavy, dense rock, whether it's live or dry is useless, and will just lead to frustration with your nutrient levels.

How are you removing the chlorine residue, are you soaking the socks in de-chlorinator as a last step? Perhaps the 200 micron mesh will be best once they "age" a bit.

200 micron felt fills up in 1 1/2 - 2 days, 200 micron mesh seems to never fill, just a bit in the bottom. I'm going try to find 100 micron mesh.

I'm addicted to filter socks, I can't seem to stop. Easier not to use them, but love the look of crystal clear water. 200 micron felt, tried the mesh, but I'm not sure they remove enough.

How will he know how to treat the tank if he doesn't know what caused it? Water changes are a good idea, but he needs to get to the root of problem in order to fix it. JMO of course.

I'm thinking it's not the bulb then. It looks like you have enough of the outer casing to give you some shielding. My bulb cracked the same way, but exposed the tank to the whole inner bulb. It...

Is everything not under that light OK? If so the damage is done. All you can do is some water changes to export the extra nutrients, and I would leave that light off for a couple of days, then slowly...

I don't think the bulb would be the cause of your cloudy water, unless the inner bulb broke. I had an outer bulb break on my 180, and ended up cooking 1/3 of my tank, but no cloudy water, and the...
