If you go with U-tube style drill a hole in the top and run an airline to a powerhead in your tank. (provided there is one) The constant sucktion will ensure that the siphon never breaks due to air...

Since all you levels are fine it might be your lights. How old are your light bulbs? NO lights especially 50/50s can turn a bit yellow with age, which might appear green in different type of water....

Looking for a tank to use for a sump. I need a 25-30 gallon tank, it can't be any longer than 30 inches. Dont care what condition as long as it holds water.

I'd be careful with sand in the sump. I found that the waste gathers in it and actualy causes a nitrate problem, unless you do grow macro algae with it. You also run the risk of sucking sand into...
