Well I wasn't sure about the skimmer as it took some time to get it dialed in just right and had to add a 90* elbow upwards to the output pipe but after one day of it running just the way I want it...

They are actually one piece, they grew together....

Using dead rock is ok but I would get some live sand to seed the dead sand and a few pieces of live rock to seed the dead rock, it will help you big time.
