The sump would definitely be the least shock, we have a small netted enclosure that we keep in the main, with just a rock and some pipe in it. It works well for observing as well as keeping predators...

when we had our BTA we used abs plastic and wedged them at an angle under the blower, so when he moved close it would just push him in front and he would just get blown around, it worked very well....
