New to the game

Let me start off by saying I'm open to all critizism because I'll admit I'm flying by the seat of my pants with my 120G tank. It was supposed to be more for my roomate, I split the cost with him and he knows a lot more about aquariums then I do. But things happen and now I'm attempting this myself.

We built our own pump/filter system, but I also added a store bought filter because we seem to get a lot of gunk on the top of the water. Right now all I have in the tank is 100lbs of liverock, about 30lbs of dry rock/dead coral that he bought for some unknown reason, 2 cleaner shrimp, 2 clowns, a leather that I just bought a couple days ago, and (this is where I expect the critizism) today I got a psychadelic mandarin goby.

My tank has only been up and running for about 4 months now. The only casualty I've had is a yellow tang. I think it was a bad buy to begin with because it was a very shy and timid fish, and rather small. He didn't eat at all and I tried seaweed clips and veg flakes. A couple days before he died he had a red splotch on its side that looked like internal bleeding, could anyone shed a light on that situation?
