Holey moley, I think you could have a future in plumbing.
Now if you could just attach electric solenoids to those gate valves and hook it up to a keyboard, you could play that thing like an organ. (not in a Monty Python way please)
Seriously, you're going to love the control of flow to different parts of your tank.
How do you remove the filter socks for cleaning?

Thanks Trevor, it's surprising how much silicone you can waste building a tank this size.

Being a welder you have to be able to do piping so it comes in handly.
The last piece of pipe on the OF is in glued in, just turn off the flow, pull out the down tube & pull out the filter sock.

Well it's full & flowing at half the pump volume because I'm waiting for a replacement power supply for one of my WaveLine DC1000. ZERO plumbing leaks so I'm very very happy with that but I am going to have to add a balancing line to join the 2 return side together, not a big deal.

All is good & the living room is dry
Next time you should bring her along.
Just tell your niece I'd rather swin in my pool, it's much warmer but you could have a bath in it .
That sump and all the plumbing is incredible! So clean and professional. And I was just up in the Red Deer area...

wow grizz,
simply put, this is the tank that all of us reefers aspire to. The professionalism on that sump is incredible. I just have one question i can't figure out... I see 6 return pumps, though only two on each side are plumbed to return lines - it looks like the four pumps feed 8 separate return lines. What are the other two pumps for?
WOW!!! That looks amazing!!! I'm as excited and anxious for you to get it all running, as everyone else, good luck!! :)

Thanks Monk, trying really hard to keep this build very neat & organized. You are correct the are 4 - DC10000 feeding the 8 returns. The 2 other pumps are DC5000 and will feed my chiller, 3 reactors & my 60 gal seahorse tank that is yet to come.

Be interesting to see what you come up with. Here's my final comment on this, in hopes it may save you some experimenting.
If you base design conditions on a 1" different between chamber heights, a single 2NPS line will only flow around 1000GPH max. Given the flow rate of each pump, the number of pumps on each side, the fact each run on current switching devices and you plan on adjusting flow rates on each line with gate valves you will need the capability of a larger flow rate than say 1000GPH. Also if one pump is shut off for maintenance or other reasons this number will have to increase further. 1" design difference may also be too extreme as well when you consider how your ATO will work. Ultimately 3-4 2NPS connection pipes may be needed, whether there is room for this or not is the question.
Since you're against gaps under baffles the best solution may be removing the baffles and trimming the width, then adding another baffle that connects the chambers of each side. Pic for ref:

Wow Greg, what a tank. I can't wait to see it in person and with the cubes. It looks like all that planning and hardwork is paying off. Your gonna have one of the nicest tanks in Alberta. Its gonna put the last 300 tank i saw to shame. It would make a great backdrop to a red deer and area reefers meeting;).

I do appreciate your thoughts and efforts here Steve but taking out the baffles, cutting them down & adding a back passage channel is not an option at this point. I am going to wait to do anything else until I can get all the pumps running to see what the difference might be.
I think the easiest way of balancing the 2 return side would be just a 1" pipe to join them. I can test this by using the 2 holes for the middle pumps on both ends with a few fitting and a piece of hose. Update on this to come.

:spit:I highly doubt than unless I can get absolutely everything just perfect with dosing & water changes.

You, me & the tank make 3  Dont know if the wife would appreciate that. As it is she grumbles when, as she calls it " my fish cronies come out in the evening. Shes only partly reef safe, the part that just like to look at it.

Also have been thinking of doing a power linear lift actuator to be able to adjust my lighting up or down by remote control :surprise:

Alright then ladies and gents here's an update for anyone that is still interested.
After almost 2 months of rebuilding our kitchen from the floor up I finally got a chance to finish building the end towers & stand for the 60 gal, painted and moved into the house. A couple of weeks back I cut the front face panels for the bottom of the whole stand & found some premade doors that match the size I required.
Here's a few pics..........

Well made a small amount of progress tonight despite being up since 4 am due to an emergency call out followed by 2 more through out the day, hate this cold weather cause it always causes equipment break downs. Had a little nap after call out #2 which it seems was not a good idea cause now I cant get to sleep.
Anyways the bottom front of the stand is all faced and doors on, have to finish my command center on the left end so I can get the doors on as well. Then its to the top cabinets, light hanger & canopy...........
Stay tuned...........

Surprised you didn't drop this here........I just read your 300 g. Thread, do I have to wait till next season like with a tv show? I'm left hanging , are the cubes in place? Is the wood done?
How's your back? That's a closed loop right? (Sorry couldn't help myself)
Wow that tank is crazy, the thought that's gone into it is probably more the the labour time...
I'm going to drive you crazy with questions
Do you have a favourite drink or like wild meat? Going need to keep you happy :)
 Will not have to wait until next season......
Cubes are not in yet maybe in a week......
Wood work is almost done hopefully by Sunday.....
Back/shoulder is day to day......
NO closed loop ........
Long Islands or Kokanee & wild meat, Im a bear so yes..
Have a couple little things to do and I will be filling the tank and getting it salty again hopefully by Sunday, taking a good portion of water from the other tanks to get it all started and seeding some more rock in the existing tank.
Stay tuned another pic update this week.

in my old shop I made a quick and dirty one to try it out. I just used a high torque stepper motor with a cam plate, ran a 1/2" rod the length of the cabinets, has a little "J" welded to the main rod at each door that would slide into a eye bolt, and I supported the rod every now and then with a set of sealed bearings that I pressed some pulley rings on to. was board at work and spent about 8 hour on the lathe making those. if you use an actuator, and a similar design make its a spring open or fail open or normally open, and actuate to close other wise if your power goes out your doors stay locked.

What kind of locks are they? I dont want anything on the exterior to take away from the clean smooth look, thats why I am thinking of an internal actuator.

You need a constant power to the electric mag locks and something to interrupt that power to open them as for the latch style you add power to release

Magnetic knob on the outside holding the lock tab in so the door can open:
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx291/GRIZZtheWELDER/300%20gal%208%20footer/FCFC2442-1F1A-4150-809C-EE9B9BDABE66_zpstgcqh5xg.jpg (http://s765.photobucket.com/user/GRIZZtheWELDER/media/300%20gal%208%20footer/FCFC2442-1F1A-4150-809C-EE9B9BDABE66_zpstgcqh5xg.jpg.html)
Now a neat feature, as you see in the first pic the red lever is down. If you hold the lock tab in and flip the red lever up it will hold the lock tab in so you can open & close the door with out the magnetic knob:

Holee crap that's a lot of pump drivers :surprise:
If you don't mind a suggestion for aesthetics, you could put mesh on the fans side of the door, between the fans and the door. Bug screen or something, and no screws on the outside
I know you've already drilled the holes, but you could still fill them in, or just rotate them and drill again ...
Unless you like the fan guards on the outside :noidea:
I used black fibreglass bug screen for mine

Greg, can't quite tell from the picture but are the fans blowing in or out, or a mix? also is there any open space to let air in or out of the cabinet to make up for the fans?
what I have found is it is always better to use fans to suck the air out of the area you want cooled, and to set up the air intake so the fans basically pull the new air over the parts you want cooled.
I also try hide both intakes and exhausts especially if there is light in the cabinet as I don't want anything distracting the eye from the tank its self, and it may be me but light spillage drives me batty haha.

Fans are blowing in as its the only way to really cool the power supplies enough, there is a 2" gap at the bottom of the doors where I will be putting some sort of grill for the aesthetics . The light in this area is only on when I want it on, I have 4 switches that control all the under cabinet LED's & upper cabinets independently.

Well after 2 weeks of cycling its time to get some light on the subject today but first I had to get my Profilux 3ex all setup & tuned in. Was having some issues with getting my conductivity probe to calibrate. Turns out there was a problem with the board that the conductivity probe connects to, so................on went the repair mans hat. Opened up both my 2ex & 3ex, removed the board from both and took the one from my 2ex & put it in to the 3ex, updated the firmware to the latest & BAM.........we now have calibrated conductivity, pH & Temp probes.
With the issues solved with the controller it was time to get it back into the upper cabinet & plug in the control cables to the EVG cards for my LED's, program my 2 power bars, program my light cycle & tuck all the wires away.
Once that was all down it was time to move a few of the corals that I still have remaining moved over to the 300. Got my 5 maxi mini's removed from the rocks they where on as I did not want to take the chance of any colonial hydroids transfered to the new tank. Moved the small chucks of frogspawn, hammer & octospawn, orange plate & the few other frags that I have managed to save.

Not really but I should have put it in my LED build thread. Simply put from left to right, black divers are for reds & greens, small silver drivers are for the high noon white's, first 2 large silver drivers are for the blues & last 2 large silver drivers are for the cool whites. Each row of LED's are controlled by the EVG boards, 2 rows of LED's per board all controlled by my Profilux 3ex controller.

Generally you can have Frogspawn, Hammer, and Torch touching as they are all the same family.
I have a bunch in one spot in my tank and they all touch, but I do notice that my Torch occasionally causes issues with the others.

Yes the middle return pump closest to the cube is running the cube. Adding a small pump into the OF to feed the chiller.

Pumps are working great, actually had to turn them down a notch. No heaters yet, I have not had a heater in any of the tanks in my livingroom due to the in floor heat that keeps the room very warm. That is why I have a chiller running all yr round & it keeps my tank at a perfect 78*f
I have been meaning to plug everything into my Profilux power bars so I can see the power draw but just haven't got there yet.

Thanks Adam & yes those are plastic plants in the cube. We have a pair of color changing seahorse's in the cube and it is best to keep the tank full of bright colors to help them stay colorful and not turn black.

Yes I'm still here........been super busy and not much really new with the tank really. I did make a small purchase to help maintain the tank. Took the plunge and bought a Genius Reef Systems Auto Top Off & Auto Water change systems after getting to see there products in person at a fellow CanReefers. Still dont have it all hooked up yet as I want to rebuild our well water room to add water capacity. Also going to add an RO system to make sure that my water for the tank is the best it can be.
I will update with some pics as soon as I give the tank a once over to straighten it out a bit.

Hey all its been a while.....
So made a few changes to the setup as of late with a few more to come. I ditched using GFO and went back to the bio pellets as well as added an algae scrubber to hopefully get my phos down to exceptable levels. I purchased a Mars Hydro 300w LED for the scrubber on Ebay and man that thing is BRIGHT but I am thinking I should put it on a timer to control the light so its not on 24/7. If anyone has an algae scrubber please chime in with what you got going.
Also after several yrs of service I noticed that my DIY LED's where having issues and with Modular LED no longer existing I decided to replace them with Radion G3's.
So I will have the auto water change & top off system installed after I get an RO unit purchased. Now I can here most of you know...."YOU DON'T HAVE AN RO UNIT YET!!!" Well in fact yes I do but its for the whole house to clean the well water which is horrific. The only reason I am adding an small RO unit is just to make sure that my water is as good as it gets beside on the plus side my filters, membrane & DI should last a hell of a long time.
More updates and some pics some.

Well 2015 was not good to me or the family at all!!!
First off we lost all our Koi for the pond the night before we where heading to Africa from a electrical surge ( best I can figure )
Second the day we where traveling home from our Africa trip our 6 yr old male husky Zeus had what the vet figures was an epileptic seizure and passed away one block away from the vet, our son was rushing him in when he passed. Worst homecoming ever!!! Really miss my beautiful boy.
Third my tank was completely over run by asterina stars destroying all my zoas. Ended up removing a lot of my rock as it was covered in them. My whole house RO system membrane fouled due to system failure of my bleaching pump which caused my tank ro system to fail causing very very bad water quality.
Fourth and without a doubt the hardest hit was the passing of our beloved beautiful female husky Roxie, my heart still hurts and almost in tears as I type this. Something unknown destroyed all her platelets in her blood. We had the vet run every test there was to try to determine the cause with no results. We tried a platelet enriched transfusion but still lost her July 11, she let out a couple cries that brought both my wife & I running to her, she crawled into our laps, looked up into our eyes gave both of us a kiss and took her last breath.......OMG that was hard to type!!!!
Then last but not least I had a fish I bought from a tank shutdown that looked really healthy when I got it and was doing great in my tank. Then out of the blue my Scopus tang decided he didn't like him. Picked on him until he was dead. I didn't notice it right away and suspect that the dead fish might have been carrying the velvet virus and with in less then 2 weeks all but one tang and 3 wasses were dead.
I have been thinking long and hard about just shutting it all down for good!!!

Wow, that was a tough year! I only hope that you can see the light at the end of the tunnel and keep your tank going because it's a beauty! Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Wow, I have silently followed your thread since the beginning. Having a tank wipe out is awful and something I can relate to. Throw in the loss of other beloved pets and well it sucks the life out of you. It really does, but as much as it hurts you have to remember the good, the triumphs, the satisfaction, and all the peace and contentment it brings.
Loss is always hard, and it's natural to have very mixed feelings about continuing when your hit with utter frustratingly depressing situations.
Pick yourself up and take it slow. You will find the joy in the hobby again, you will realize the happy times with your dogs more than the loss.
Keep your chin up! It will get better.
