Next weekend?

The 26th/27th

Dunno about te 26th or the 27th...Chinese New Year and tied up with my sons' activities next week... How about the 9th of Feb? This will give me time to build a stand for the 90 and get the new lights hooked up...

The new lights are not hooked up yet (probably wont be able to until after next week) but I just couldn't resist taking some new pics with the new lights... These new lights are definitely the right set of lights for my tank and my camera. Compared to previous pics I find the Mitras make the pictures come out even warmer than before, much like taking pics of corals under T5s...

Thanks. I currently have 3 Radions above the tank. Hope to have the Mitras up soon! I am in process of planning my second tank in the garage. Once the 2nd tank is up the main display will be going through a change... Stay tune...

This one is from Snappy and has a fancy name like purple poison SC or something like that... Starting to see green purple and pink!

At this rate of growth they won't be any bigger than a mini colony when I am 80. :twised:

Ur always welcome over. I find that the colours from the Radion look washed out but it is not a fair comparison to the Mitras. What I like most from the Mitras is the closest resemblance to t5s which was the main reason why I bought them. Again this is my preference not saying this is better then other LEDs... I still like my the Radions... I'm getting some decent growth and I intend to keep at least two of the three Radions for my second set up soon.

Brad, I have been running the three lights at 100% iMo I think the AIs are stronger than the Radions. Did you place them high in your tank? Ur welcome to clip more...

It's been a long four months since I tore down the 120 and I have to admit... It was the best way ( for me) to eradicate the flatworms and to be certain they will not come back. Today is a special day ( besides being Father's Day) as once again, the 120 is being filled with water again.

I've made some changes... 1)Two new light stands bolted behind the tank ( thanks, Jon! Awesome job on them! ). Each stand will be supporting a Mitras 2) dropped the mp40 and mp60 for two Tunzes. 3) I've filled the bottom with sand
4) eliminated a lot of rocks and to go with more of a simple and open concept look.

I am still making more new water for the tank tonight so it won't be fully up and running until tomorrow however, I was able to snap a few pics to share... Hope to share some better pics in a day or two... Tank is still cloudy from the sand.

I think I would rather settle with ten frag racks then ten tangs.:twised::twised::twised:

I think I'll stick with wrasses for now. Brad and Rich says I'm only allow to have 25 corals ( mind you, if people want to toss fragments in to the tank that should be ok so long as its not of my doing :twised::twised::twised:) so now I have all this open space there should be enough room for a few more wrasses. getting a show tang just means I will someday have to upgrade to give the fish more room to swim.

One tang.. Gem tang

As for wrasse?? sky is the limit. just leopard along, there is red, black, chaoti, potter, African blue star and etc..

And fairy wrasse on the other hand?? Don't even get me started.

Well Wayne.
I read through the your whole build thread. I had no idea you had your ehiem 1262 for sooo looong.. lol.
It's in now. So all is well.

You had a lot of really really nice coral in there. I am guessing you will have more around 50 frags in your tank within the next 4 months.

Anyone else want to guess.?

And again. The new layout looks great. Fish are going to have a lot more room to play. Well at least for the next year until those corals take over.

I need to come by and take another look.
See you

Day 8: Since my last update I have now added a mp40 to the back of the tank and running in nutrient export mode. I've also connected the PH and ORP probes and I will have to recalibrate them for accuracy. The JBJ auto top off is set and I am only experiencing 5 gallons of water evaporation over the week. the skimmer seems to be skimming well... Pulling clean foam and still using the same filter sock since day 1 ( Guess I did a pretty good job in rinsing the sand ) ... This is going to be as clean as its gonna get. I am still adding MB7 daily and if all is well... I will be adding the fish back to the 120.

I have just completed a water test tonight and it looks like I may have miscalculated the amount of salt needed...

Ca: 360
Mg: 1090
Alk: 5.6
PO4: 0
NO3: 0
PH: 7.99-8.07 ( have not calibrated the probe yet)
ORP: 325-360 ( have not calibrated the probe yet)
Salinity: 1.021
Temp: 79.8-80.0

Good news is that nitrate an phosphate are undetectable (0).

Will add more salt tonight and then retest in couple days.

Ca: 380
Mg: 1050
Alk: 6.4

ORP: 331-360 ( have not calibrated the probe yet)
Salinity: 1.024
Temp: 79.8-80.0

Salinity is acceptable, increase in Alk, slight increase in Ca and slight decrease in Mg. Set up the phosban reactor running biopellets and will be setting up the doser tomorrow to bring Ca, Mg and Alk up.

Has your Regal Tang been getting a beating from the Purple? He looks a bit "rough around the tail".

thanks, guys! I am starting to really like the two bartletts... I only have the two but it looks like they are an item now as they are always swimming together and never far away from each other.

I've had the regal for almost three yrs now. I purchased him from Pro Reef with the tail like that and it has never changed since. As for the Purple he is a model citizen in the tank. I've never seen him/her acting aggresive to others. Speaking of aggression, my laboutti wrasse has been acting schitzo the last couple days... He would darting at the bartletts and others or chase them until he tires out. I thought Laboutti are suppose to be easy going...

Thanks. I'll take a crispy pic later tonight. Being lazy I had just used my 70-200 and cropped it so not the cleanest pic. I'm not certain if it is or not as this came from Jon (freezetyle), however it is certainly one of my favorites along with the valida from Darryl.

LOL! Well, the macro was on the second floor... The tank is in the basement... I forgot to mentioned that I used extension tubes with the 70-200. I was lazy to run up the stairs to get it.

Haha! I'll take some macro shots tonight.

Ah, good 'ol extension tubes. Love those things! Still, photographing your tank with the beastly 70-200, that's BOSS. I would be afraid of arm fatigue resulting in me dropping the entire contraption into my tank

To tell ya the truth my 180 macro is prob heavier than the 70-200, but I hear ya, I would never dangle that over the tank, especially with extension tubes... I'd use them only for front and side shots. But for you, I saw you doing some crazy mission impossible stunts to take pics of your tank... Something like this...

Thanks, Greg! Have two gorgs that survived the tear down of the 120 back in Feb/March. I thought I had lost them as they were down to the skin purple blue skin and no polyps what so ever. Once the new 120 got going the Gorgs bounced back and quickly too. They are very resilient animals!

Thanks! According to Rich and Peter, so long as the corals on glued down to the rocks they are no longer cosidered as frags (no plugs). hehe...

How about an update on yours?:wink::wink:

Not much new to update really but things are chugging along and with my regular routines in place, corals are colouring up, slowly but surely and all the fish are now happy swimming and living together. I did pick up more clean up crews... three conches, couple of cleaner shrimps, a pair of cleaner wrasses and a yellow coris wrasse. For hardware, added two WP40s... these guys can really push a lot of water and the waves it can create is very impressive for the money. Also picked up a apex energy bar 8 to make my system a bit more automated.
I have also had Industrial Plastics to make a custom top down box for me. The box is 14 x16 and 2.5 inches deep.

Should have made one from the beginning instead of spending good money on the Eshopps look down viewer.

That top down box was money well spent. Looks great.

Those wp40's really do put out some great flow. The waves you had going the other day were just awesome.

Thanks, guys! The custom box cost me $90 which covered all the materials, glue, labor, cutting and tax. This box would be equal to 4-5 of the Eshopps look down viewer and with the price of $34 plus tax why not invest $35-$50 more in one that is customized to your tank. Industrial Plastics was awesome. The cutting and gluing is all clean. Sure, i could have tried doing it myself however I would have spent more money, wasted more time and the box glue smudges all over.

My monthly pic update... this time of my new coral collection over the summer. Thanks to Rich, Brad and the two Jons for getting me started. Since then I have adopted a East coast taste for other frags ( Thanks to Frag Box and the jelly guys from MJC) and hope to be able to return the favour once these corals grow out. So less talk and more pics... here we go and we'll start with the tank shots first...

So I have jumped on to the zeovit bandwagon and into week three I am starting to see some nice colouring with some of the sps. I am not doing the full zeovit regiment but I have incorporated quite a few of the blue bottles into my routine and dosing less then half of what it suggests on the bottles.
Here are some pics to share...

It's been a pretty rewarding and satisfying night... Water change, sucked out all the crud accumulated the last three months and replaced the vertex alpha 200 skimmer with the newly acquired BK 200 mini... Here is a pic of it in the sump... Will be tuning the skimmer the next couple days and hope to hit that sweet spot.

Well.. let's see how the BK runs first... I have not written the Alpha off by any means. Both are great skimmers but I think the BK may be more practical for my sump.

Thanks. To be honest, my settings vary and it depends if I am using tripod or not, where the lights are etc... I think I shot these at ISO 500, lower f stops as I was using a tripod ( I am usually too lazy and would shoot hand held) and shutter remote. I also used a 2x extender on the 100 macro lens as well.

Happy New Year to all reefers! Not much to update other than experiencing patches of cyano and to take care of this I added chemiclean into the tank and I will complete the process with a 40-50 gallon water change this weekend. Some frags have taken only 2-3 mths to settle while others have taken 4-5 mths...

Within the past three weeks Alk hit 11, ca is at 1390 and mg is at 1290. Will need to incr on ca and mg and with the water change to reduce the Alk. I may keep it higher as I am noticing better growth, or it may just be a coincidence.

The BK is doing an tremendous job while the new wp25s increases the flow and making the millis even happier.

Here are a few new pics....

After using chemiclean the cyano is gone ( hopefully for good) however, there are still numerous patches of turf algae on the rocks. To fight the algae war I have increased the GFO and have been adding 30ml of MB7 for the last 16 days and planning to add a few turbos. Besides the algae the corals are finally starting to show signs of growth and coloring. Hope you like the pics and ehem! Please ignore the algae in the pictures...

I try to keep things simple... Feed moderately and do regular water changes. I do run bio pellets, gfo and carbon and I am currently dosing the big three but I do plan to use a calcium reactor down the road. I have a lot of them blue bottles and I add zeospur2 once a week and I also add biomate, zeozym and coral snow. The other blue bottles will sit on the shelve for now as I don't think the tank is fully ready for them. I also look up to the reef gurus like Rich, Kien and Brad and adopt their ideas and husbandry. Lastly, I pray every night.

Corals look Great! which Zeo products have you been testing with?

Thanks! I think I have a bottle of each. The ones I use most often are coral snow and zeozym. I also add zeo spur2 and zeo spur macro elements once every two weeks and as for aminos, once every two weeks but it looks like I may need to increase it to once a week. I also dose k and b balance, potassium iodide once a week at this time and polls extra as needed. I am also dosing brightwell potassium and reef strontium once a week.

Those pieces are stunning, they have such vivid colors with a light base. Mind if I ask you what levels you keep your nitrates, phosphates at, and what zeovit products are you using to get the awesome color changes? Do you feed the tank quite heavily as well?

Just completed my testing today and my nitrates is under .2 ( salifert) and phosphates is undetectable ( using Hanna hi ranger checker). These two levels have been consistent for the last three months and is due to consistent biweekly 50 gallon water changes and not feeding the fish heavy ( I feed the fish pellets and nori daily and they get a pinchful of pellets three times per day. I have almost every blue bottle available however i do not dose daily. Here is what my zeo schedule looks like...

Coral snow: two-three times per week
Zeozym: one to two times per week
Zeospur 2: once every two weeks
Zeospur Macro elements: same time as Zeospur 2
K and B Balance: once a week
Potassium iodide: once a week
Biomate: one to two times per week
Pohl's Extra: as needed
Sps Aminos: once per week
LPS Aminod: once per week

I am also dosing brightwells potassium and reef strontium once a week.

In March the tank experienced a set back when I was taking out two clowns and a yellow tang. Many of the corals were out of water for at least an hour and a half as I had to drain eighty gallons of water out. Catching the yellow tang was easy however, the clowns were a bit of a challenge as they were small enough to squirm into the rocks making it hard for me to get at them.

Being out of the water that long the corals showed their displeasure. Many of the sps lost their nice colors and some, like the validas bleached out and quite a few of the tips were fully covered with algae like they had a chia pet head. Most of the corals recovered but the bonsais and nanas didn't so much and I had to clip off most of the tips.

Over the last three weeks, the corals bounced back to its normal form. The tank had experienced an increase in phosphate from 0 to 0.02 but I expect this to fall back to 0 soon.
