View Full Version : My two 230g tanks and 80g add on

Since I never did do a tank journal for either of my 230g tanks I figured now was a good time and I would update everyone on my situation.

A few of you may remember that a few weeks ago I had some sort of illness go through my tank, I did loose a bunch of fish, some to the illness and some during treatment (skunk clowns, checkerboard and solaris wrasse ) and some fish died after the treatment. Flame angel went MIA a few days after treatment, even though he seemed to be doing ok

Anyway when I first started treating the whole system a friend of mine took my corals for me to hold them for me and after I treated my reef fish (with a formalin dip, which killed some of them ) he took the rest of the fish. Unfortunately the tank he had my sohal tang and my corals in crashed last night and now my GBTA & corals are not doing well/almost dead and my sohal tang is dead  Some of my lps (frogspawn) I have had for 4 yrs and grew from a few heads to about 10-12

I had thought about selling one of the 230g tanks (the fowlr one) but it seems Doug (fishytime) has some plans for that tank (so we'll see what happens) and I guess I'll be keeping it for now.

I QT'd my fowlr fish and I am doing hypo salinity on them now so the fish I have left from the fowlr tank are: King/passer angel (thank god because even though she's mean she's my fav.) lunare wrasse, toby puffer (who never caught the disease so I have him in a 10g QT tank on his own), blue line trigger, foxface, maroon clown and bursa trigger.

The reef fish I have left that I'd like to keep are my juvi red corris wrasse, cleaner wrasse, yellowhead sleeper goby and 6-line wrasse. The reef fish that are still alive but don't think I'll keep (I will sell them once I know they are totally healthy) are my female Ocellaris Clownfish, yellow watchman goby and pink spotted watchman goby. Also debating on selling the foxface since my king picks on him all the time, however the king doesn't do to much damage to the foxface and the foxface is pretty good at holding his own against her so I don't know. Also not sure how my lunare wrasse would react to the other wrasse I have but since they are much smaller then him I am hoping he'd be ok with them.

I unfortunately still have to catch the red corris wrasse from the reef tank :twised: We had the tank totally empty and had caught all the other fish but since I hadn't seen the red corris for a few days prior, I figured he was dead and we had all the fish out so we (or I should say Doug and Steve from Red coral) put the rock back in. Of course 2 days later there he was still in the tank! :twised: I have Bob's fish trap but haven't had too much time to stand for hours holding the trap door up to catch him. I will try again later on today. So far the red corris is fine and eating and looking perfectly healthy so I still can't quite figure out what on earth my fish caught.

So I need to figure out which tank to put the fish I want to keep back into and which one to keep empty. I think I'll put my fish in my 230g reef tank since it has the nice rock work stand on it and it is hard to place corals in it because it's so tall with the cap on it and I'll figure out what to do with the 230g fowlr tank later on down the road. Also the timing of all this really really sucks as I just went from a dual income (a few months ago) to paying all the bills on my own, which means my reef budget is now going to mortgage payments and I am very broke

Wow sorry to hear :(

It seems as though this hasn't been a great summer for a lot of tanks.. Mine included! Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

Good luck. On the positive side, at least your tanks did NOT break and release 230g of sw all over your carpets:redface:

Hope you sort this stuff out soon. I know some of what you're going through. It has been a tough year for several of us reefers but hopefully the worse is behind us and our tanks will all be better than ever. Chin up:wink:

You already know my take on the whole situation Girly, the easy thing to do would be to pack it in, but that is what makes us all reefers.....we are all gluttons for punishment.....you know you have to keep on truckin.....you are NOT shutting down:wink:

Ya you cant quit now! I feel really bad about the Sohal and your corals/nem.....like i said it will all be covered. I know there was an attachment to them as you have had them for years but it is the best i can do in the mean time....

Give me a shout anytime this week if you are bored and we can sit down and plan your comeback tanks over pool if you would like!

Thanks everyone and you're right Anthony at least my tanks didn't break, that definately would of been worse! I felt bad for you when I heard yours did

Steve you were helping me out and doing me a favor, what happend sucks, so thanks for being good about eveything and willing to replace them. PS plan on getting your butt kicked at pool!

Thanks to the encouragement from others and with the help of my boyfriend Doug (aka fishytime) I have decided to keep both tanks. They are now both nicely aquascaped (thanks to Doug) and the fish that survived are all back in the tanks.

Fish in the 230g FOWLR are as follows:

King/passer angel
bursa trigger
blueline trigger
blue spotted toby puffer
cleaner wrasse
niger trigger

Only other fish I might add:

target/spotted mandarin
flame hawkfish
checkerboard or dusky wrasse

Fish in the 230g Reef:

One spot yellow foxface
Female? (large) maroon clownfish
red corris wrasse (never was able to catch him out of the reef )
sixline wrasse

Fish I want to add

regular/striped mandarin goby
red scooter blenny
starry blenny
blonde naso tang
clown tang
purple tang
flame angel
emperor angel
cleaner wrasse

also might try to add a small male? maroon clown in the hopes they pair up and I am going to get an anemone for the clownfish.

Thanks to working a few hours at Red coral in Edmonton and babysitting my friends kids (to make extra money) and Doug bringing me stuff for my tanks, I am able to keep both tanks up and running and set up the way I like them.

As for the teaser part, I have some pic.'s but they're at home so I'll have to wait until later to post them :twised:

Your tanks are looking good Laurie! The new aquascaping looks great. Although I liked the reef 'scape better before, the fowlr is much improved! Hehe. Damn me, huh? :p

Oh I've said it before but I love love love the stand under the reef! Oh, and all the triggers...they are uber cool, but the Angels are sweet @$$ uber noice!

Thanks but I'm confused, the reef tank was never really aquascaped properly before, the rock was just randomly placed where ever my ex could drop it/fit it. There were a lot more corals that helped make it look ok but the rock was plopped in without much thought given to it. I always hated how the rock looked like it was just dumped in, now there are cool arches and caves and many hiddey holes for the fish to swim in and around, personally I like it a lot better.

The only angel I have now is my King angel, the others either died in the tank crash or in the weeks after when my friend was looking after them. I also only have 3 triggers now, my bursa, my blue line and my new niger.

One spot foxface and his buddy maroon clownfish both of them were in the 230g fowlr tank but because they always got picked on I moved them to the 230g reef. Unfortunately I think the split in the top back fin of the maroon clown is now permanent. Also the maroon is a lot smaller then the foxface but the way the pic. was taken they look almost the same size.

So there has been a few changes since the last time I posted. I got a few new fish in the past 2 months and I got a pic. of my scooter blenny however my 6-line is still to fast :twised: I shut down my 20g cube tank and moved the corals and filefish into the reef and added a 80g refugium tank that has rock and my fu man chu lionfish on one side and my mangrove pods and chaeto on the other. I'll start the update with fish pic.'s

I was always a little bit scared to get one but a few people I know have had them and they have never had any issues with theirs so I went ahead and got one for myself  I keep a close eye on him and I make sure no one is stressing him and so far so good he gets along well with everyone and no one bothers him

My new 80g refugium/extra rock/lionfish tank which Doug set up and plumbed into the rest of my system. I have more rock to add but I don't want to add to much rock at once so I am doing it slowly, also would like to add even more rock but I will have to wait until I get extra money before I can do that. I think once everything is established and all the rock I do have is added I might get a pipefish or 2 and add them into this tank.

Ok it's been awhile since I last posted. I took a bunch of pic.'s this weekend and I will share all the pic.'s over the next few days.

I'll start with a FTS of the reef (still working on getting a decent fts of the fowlr)

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii53/Laurie_Morin/doug/P4020919.jpg

The cowfish in the previous pic's mysteriously died after 2 months of it doing well :noidea: However they are one of my absolute favorite fish so I ended up getting another one. This time I put the cowfish into my 80g tank were there is less flow and and slower moving fish. I'm hoping that helps. I have had him just over a month, he eats like a pig but he does have some ich on him. I just hope he lives and does well in the 80g. He lives with my fu man chu lionfish, my matted filefish and my orange spot blenny who a couple of weeks ago decided to take a trip down the reef tank overflow and now lives in the 80g.

Ya I love blennies, just glad he took a detour into the 80g tank instead of ending up in the sump.

I've had the fu man chu for just over a year now, he still eats like a pig (mysis and krill) and I do love his colouration.

Water changes are a minor PITA. I have a mixing tank that takes awhile to fill with RO and I pour the salt in until I get the salinity right, but I have a pump in there to mix it with and after I drain the water out of the main tanks, I pump the newly mixed water back into the tanks fairly easily. I have to watch the water levels in the sump and unplug pumps at the right time as I pump the old water out into the floor drain while I am doing the water change, but overall not to bad. I would be killer if I had to carry buckets around to drain the tank, TG it's set up to drain into the floor drain.

So in my fowlr tank I lost my cleaner wrasse due to carpet surfing and my cat  I would of been able to save the cleaner wrasse off the carpet (was in the tank when I fed it five minute earlier) but unfortunately my cat saw it on the floor before I did and when I came downstairs (literally what must of been minutes after it jumped) I noticed my cat tossing something up in the air and catching it, when I went to check out what he was playing with, much to my dismay it was my cleaner wrasse  That night Doug almost got his wish of me not having a cat anymore :twised:

On different days awhile ago I also found my 6-line wrasse and mandarin in the overflow. So I moved them to the reef tank were they both have settled in nicely. The red corris wrasse leaves the 6-line alone and my scooter blenny could care less about the mandarin, so moving them worked out well

Yesterday when Doug and I went to the lfs I saw this beautiful chocolate mimic tang at AI. The tang had been bought 3 yrs ago at AI as a juvi and was recently brought back to AI from it's owner. It got jumped in a bit by my other tangs but he's a bit bigger then them (he's about 5") and stood up for himself fairly quickly. About 4 yrs ago I had an opportunity to get a chocolate mimic (which I think is a beautiful fish) but the owner had two of them together and did not want to split them up and at the time I had a 120g and I did not want add two of the same tangs in it. Since then off and on I have been looking for a chocolate mimic that looked as nice as the one I remembered from all those yrs ago, happy to say I finally found one

GRRRRRRRRRR WTH!!!!!!!!

I just fed my tanks and I noticed that my orange spot blenny (same one in the pic. I took yesterday) wasn't out front and center gobbling up food like usual. I'm thinking to my self that that's strange and of course my first thought is "Oh sh*t he jumped" so I started to frantically search all around the tank and finally I see him in the tank (on the cheato and mangrove pod side) dead at the bottom  His body looked perfectly fine and in tact and he was eating well yesterday. At a total loss as to why he died, I had him for 4 months and while he spent most of that time in the reef tank, he had been in the 80g for about 2 weeks and did seem fine in there. I seriously don't get it  Also pretty sure that type of blenny gets a lot bigger (he was about 3" but i think they get to about 5") so I doubt it was from old age or anything like that :noidea:

Thanks, ya it's not to often you see adult chocolate mimic tangs, juvi colours are more yellow. I always think of them as chocolate mimic tangs but they are also called Mimic Lemon Peel Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus).

http://www.liveaquaria.com/images/categories/product/p-24033-mimicLemonPeel-juv.jpg

I was talking to Doug and the only thing we could think of was that maybe the blenny somehow got stung by the fu man chu and that's what could of killed it. However I didn't see any marks on it's body and I would of thought a lionfish sting would leave a mark of some sort or some swelling or something :noidea:

Sorry to hear it. Blennies sure seem to be sometimes very iffy that way. I lost my ember blenny about 2 months ago (just before everyone got moved over into the new tank) in much the same way: everything fine, then one day at feeding he wasn't there. Found him floating near the back of the tank. Had had him for well over a year.

Couple other blennies I've tried have never made it past the first week (both ember blennies in those two cases). Just poof, one day, they're done, that's it.

Weird and disheartening...

Strange how that is  I was thinking I might get an ember blenny in the future, but now I'm leaning more towards a starry blenny. Might just do a good old bi-colour blenny, I had one yrs ago and he was the most personable blenny I ever had.

Duncans are non-photosynthetic, so they don't need much light. I target feed mine mysis and acan plus every once in awhile (which seems to help) and I do dump a lot of mysis in when I feed my fish so I'm sure it gets some mysis from the regular tank feedings.

Sorry about your blenny that sucks

Found some info about ducan's and thought I'd share the link

http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=597+2790+2670&pcatid=2670

This info stood out to me:

"In the home aquarium, place in low current areas with low to moderate light."

"Though they feed through photosynthesis via the symbiotic algae zooxanthellae that thrive on the colony, this coral also benefits from regular target feedings of meaty marine foods such as enriched mysis and brine shrimp."

I've found Duncans to be very forgiving corals. If you don't feed them they will grow slowly. Feed them often and they explode in growth. They prefer low to moderate light and slower flow.

Hey Laurie what are the dims of that 80g?

Way to small for some of those fish....ummm good question I'll go measure and find out. Edit: I will have to measure tomorrow since it's past my bed time and I have no idea were I put my measuring tape.

FYI I'm kinda using that tank as my "grow out" fish tank. As soon as my cowfish is big enough to handle the flow and not get stuck in small rock work spots he will go into the 230g reef and as soon as my harlequin tusk gets a lot bigger (will take awhile since he's only about an inch long) he will go into the 230g fowlr, as well as the leopard and mystery wrasse when they get bigger.

There is just one (for now ) I took that pic of it the day after I added it to the tank. It has since fully opened up, in that pic it's partly tucked into the rock. The maxi minis grow around 2-5 inches, mine is around 3-4". Very similar to mushrooms and apparently were mistaken as such for years. Also apparently you can frag them like mushrooms.

Oh neat! Do you know if they ever reach out and sting anything?(I have zero experience with anemones but people always seem to talk about losing stuff to them). I wonder how they'd fare in a nano tank?

Apparently they can sting corals but their sting isn't very strong and generally they stay in the spot you put them and they tend not to move around much. They are great for nano tanks because they stay small, don't need strong light and host anemone crabs and sexy shrimp. I went to the store to pick up another one (I had wanted the orangeish ones they had) but unfortunately they only had purple/green ones left. I posted a link in the maxi mini thread I started but I'll post it here too.

These pic's were taken the day I got him on Oct 9th. He's in my FOWLR tank for now. I thought since he was so small that my king angel would ignore him, unfortunately that's not the case, but for the most part the King leaves him alone. Just chases him into the rock work every now and then, hasn't hurt him yet. It's strange to cause the blueline angel is literally the same size as the King angels tail so you'd think since he's so small he wouldn't even bother with him.

Nice Trigger! He's going to be trouble when he grows up, eh!

Never mind when he get's bigger he's already trouble  He's always blown around the sand bed, only now instead of a little puff of sand he can create a mini sand storm. On the plus side though, it keeps the sand bed looking clean. He also lately taken to moving rock :twised: usually it was 2-3 smallish pieces of loose rock that he'd move around, but last week he decided he didn't like where this one rock was (about a 5-6 pound med. decent sized piece of rock) and kept knocking it over into the front pane of glass  I ended up putting another piece of rock under that rock and finally got it tilted into a spot where he's left it alone for the past few days.

Also he seems to be the only similar shaped larger fish my King angel can't really bully. They do fight every now and then but the trigger will stand up for himself and not back down, so my King tends not to pick on him to much.

Bit of an update. On the sad side of things a couple of weeks ago my red fuzzy dwarf lionfish decided to jump out of the tank and a few days later my harlequin tuskfish didn't look to good and he's been MIA for over a week now  (kinda wonder if my mystery wrasse harassed him to much or something as I've noticed he's started chasing my leopard wrasse around)

On the bright side of things awhile ago I got a rainbow wrasse and mandarin goby that are doing well and another maxi mini anemone purple/green.

So last night I go to clean up my mixing tank for water changes and I look into my refugium (I moved my cheato and mangroves back into the sump to make room for more rock in the 80g) and low and behold I see my orange starfish :surprise: I had been wondering why I hadn't seen him in the display for awhile, but I was surprised to see him in the sump! That means that he went through my overflow into my plumbing pipes and traveled through about ten feet of plumbing pipes before getting to my sump. Crazy! Happy he's ok though.

He's back in the display now here's hoping he stays put.

When I first came home after work he was hiding. However when I got home (after going out for dinner) I was very happy to see him out in the open. The yellow tang gave him a bit of a hard time when I fed the tank, but on the plus side he did eat some mysis

The clam was from Steve at red coral and unfortunately I make less a month (working only Saturdays) then the $200 clam

 Ya right I wish! Unfortunately sunshine girls don't get paid it's strictly volunteer and in my case (back in the day) I got volunteered for it. Originally a friend of mine was supposed to go but she called me saying she was sick (pretty sure she just chickened out) and begged me to take her place.

These maximas are amazing and, BTW Laurie, yours is spectacular. I was waiting for this shipment a long time myself. Snagged one myself, I'm quite fond of it, even though it put me in the doghouse for a bit on account of cost. (I should get a picture up soon I guess.) But it was nice to be able to actually participate in a shipment for a change, for a guy like me who's chained to a desk all day and then chasing after little kids for the evenings and weekends, by the time I get to the stores, everything is picked clean and all that's left is whatever everyone else didn't want. Also noteworthy to consider IMO, the price isn't that hugely different than the Cook Island clams from a few months ago but whereas those were 1" in size, these are 6" and up. The value is incomparable.

At any rate - very nice new clams there. How many are you up to now? I think I'm up to 9. A far cry from the 14 I had at one point - but slowly climbing back up there!! I'm such a sucker for tridacnids..

Tony, was it that spawning event that caused the loss of your clams or something else? I can't remember.
Laurie. Nice score! Beautiful clams.

It might have been, hard to say. The last spawning event the clam did perish shortly after and that seemed to kick off a chain reaction that lasted a few months but they would basically let go one by one.

Tiara anthia (had been in QT for 3 weeks and is eating well ) brought him home today and thought for sure he'd go hide and stay hidden in my 80g for awhile but to my surprise he went to the back of the tank for a minute and has been out in the open since I added him

 it is a fish room, now if only it was taller then 3' that would be great  I must admit it is a real PITA to work in a space you can only sit down in, even sitting up on your knees and moving around can be hazardous to your head.

On the plus side I know what to look for in a fish room for the next house!

It's been awhile since my last update and over the past 5 months I have added a few new tankmates to my FOWLR system.

A clown tang
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii53/Laurie_Morin/Nikon%203100/DSC_0237.jpg

A large snowflake eel who decided the tank wasn't good enough for him and jumped out a few days after getting him (pushed the egg create cover off) thankfully I found him in time to save him. Doug thought he was done for, but I insisted we try to save him. So Doug helped get all the dog and cat fur off him and we got him moving around again. It's been a few weeks since then and he seems fine now. I've re-enforced the egg create and it seems to have worked, as it's kept him in so far.

Thanks Tim, it took a long time to find a healthy clown tang but they are one of my faves and I'm glad he's doing well. I also was relieved that the eel pulled through, it was stressful finding him on the floor.

On a sad note the eel tried to eat my burrfish late last night causing him to puff and in his vulnerable state the other fish started picking on him. Tried moving him to the 230g reef and while no one picked on him in there he kept getting stuck to the overflow box and unfortunately I found him dead this morning
