I've often wondered the same thing. Hard to get an idea for how old people are by how they type (or is it ? ).

Now I am feeling old 40+ I voted and came up on the down side or numbers that voted. But I am getting my daughters involved in the satwater hobby at least 2 of them. 7years old and 9 years old, we had kids late in life.

Iam 54 and had my first salt tank in 1974.It was a 110gal. undergravel filter, skimmer(air) ozone, ehiem filter, rock not live.Flame angle 90$.I also had a hawksbill sea turtle that the exporter shipped a bag full to ancient mariner(lfs) to see if they would send them money.I had it for about 1 year and she got to big and started chasing my flame so I gave it to Vancouver aquarium they raised her to breading size and gave her to Japan for breading.

I'm 36 and we had a B&W TV as a youngster. I think we were one of the last families around to get a colour TV. I've been keeping S/W for 5 years.

I'm **, but those who have met me probably think I'm in my early 20's. :cheer2: I started my first reef in 1993 it also had an UGF (under-gravel filter), a Skilter 250 "protein skimmer", 18w of T8 lighting, and a Condy anemone that didn't appreciate any of that. :(

This was my expectation also. I wonder if this poll shows us a skewed view of the cross section of reefers... people in the 40+ demographic may be less inclined to use electronic message boards.

This poll does show us a cross section of this message board's members though, good enough for me

One of the reasons it seems to taper down with the increase in age because us yongsters aren't as wise with our money. Lol. My next poll might ask people to tell how much they've dumped into the hobby since they've started.

Could be that the older demographic is less inclined to vote and/or admit to their true age on a public forum, he, he. I wouldn't be too hasty to put a lot of trust in the statistics of a poll like this. And yes, I'm getting up there.

I know a few reefers in their 50s+ who aren't all that tech savvy. Sure they have email and surf the web but don't really participate in forums. If they did (forums) they are probably their looking for specific information rather than goofing around and spilling the beans on how old they are

I fall in the 10-50 demographic..

I love the results here, apart from the 10-19 category, what an almost perfect Guassian distribution.

To be honest I'm surprised at the low #'s in the 10-19 category. That can't be indicative of the hobby, can it? I'm guessing it's really a higher percentage in the hobby in that age group but they're just disproportionately "not on Canreef" per se.

It doesn't surprise me too much to see the highest numbers so far of people in their 20's. That makes total sense to me.

I'm in the 30-39 category, and will be for a tiny little while longer (more than one year left in that category )

The flip side:

Sure there are more 20 - 29s in here than anything else but there are FAR more ppl over 30 than under it =)

I'm riding the razor's edge. A cross-section of my wood reveals 30 rings though perhaps the tree anology is not the best. I realize there are some perverts roaming these parts.

I would have never thought anything "weird" about the tree analogy until you insinuated people may turn the tree wood into...well you know what Im getting at.

I too should be working. My deadline for some work is Monday yet I still am not very motivated and terribly behind. I will just tell the client I got a new skimmer, I'm sure they will understand. I think I have used the "oh my internet was down yesterday, sorry I couldn't contact you......oh my phone went through the washing machine so I couldn't call...I didn't have a quarter for a payphone cause I only use debit..." excuse too many times now :)

Well it's a nano skimmer so I didn't need much help setting up. Although it is kind of nice to have help anyways. I find the help is usually the other guy standing with a beer telling you their opinion and watching  Which I don't mind.

I doubt the client would like the skimmer excuse. They are a law firm and don't seem to have a good sense of humor. It's been an interesting project.

I'm 26, started about 6 years ago with a converted (from fresh) 72 gallon bowfront and a Seaclone skimmer. Just now tearing down the 120 I've had for the past 5 years as I'm moving places next weekend. Tank wise, I'm moving to a five foot 112 gallon (approximately) room divider (the place is small :)). I still have the same yellow tang (knock on wood) from the 72 gallon. If it weren't for him, I'm not sure I'd be setting up a new tank, but doing so has kept the interest going strong!
