Thanks, pretty happy with this tank, seriously considering shutting down the small tank though, only thing stopping me is my bubble coral, had that one too long to part with.

Must be nice to be able to call a 300g a small tank. How come you're considering shutting down the reef?

Partly the last hydro bill but mostly not happy with how it has progressed over the last year, seems to be one problem after another, have a battle on with red turf algea now, that stuff is a real PITA. Seems I am constantly fighting the reef yet the FOWLR only needs food and every couple weeks wipe it down, no dying corals, no pest algea, no expensive equipment that seems to break as soon as I leave the house etc etc etc. Rant over, I'm going to drink a bottle of 20 year old scotch before it goes bad :twitch: Next time Marie starts talking bigger tank I'll give her the deal of the decade.

I can't imagine your hydro bill. Mine's bad enough with only 400 gallons of water!
I think Marie has changed her mind. When she thinks about moving all those SPS colonies it kind of scares her off. Can't blame her.
I've got a beer in my hand right now, so I'll tip my beer to your scotch and here's to 2010 being kinder to your reef.
PS: If you leave that 20 yr old scotch untapped for another 20 you can sell it and buy yourself a solar panel.

Few months back I lost all three large angels (French, Queen and Blue face) within 24 hrs, suspect it was some bad food, thru the rest of that batch away and did a large water change, never lost any others, was pretty upset about losing the three, they were the favorites and seriously considered selling it off, however stepped back and let it be, all is doing well and the Clown trigger and Emperor angel are growing quick so I think in time they will fill the void. I will try and get some fresh pics up here in the next few days. The reef is another story all together, seems it is going down the same path it did last spring, corals that were growing and doing well suddenly RTN for no reason, not going to add anything new to that tank, when it gets to the point I cant stand to look at it anymore I will break it down and sell it off.

Really sorry to hear about the losses :( Those fish were amazing, to say the least. It would seem a shame to throw it all in after you put so much work into it and the 300G. Are you running Ozone or anything on the 300G? perhaps its some kind of pathogen.

No Ozone, although I could thow it on there and see if it makes a difference, funny thing is everything has been working like a fine watch, no glitches with any equipment and regular testing shows nothing abnormal, some stuff is doing real good, some just hanging in there and some that was doing real good just dropped dead without warning, looks great one day and shiny white skeleton the next, go figure.

He's about 3.5-4 inches and isn't cranky at all, actually did quite well with a mixed reef but, there aren't many appropriate homes for it here! But he's quite entertaining and certainly healthy. Wish I'd asked yesterday, could've sent it over to you today with my Mom. If you want, it's yours as you could give it a much better home than it's in right now. Can I send it over next time? I'd really appreciate it!

Guess it's time for an update on this, everything has been fine since the unexpected loss of the large Angels, new additions are growing and everyone is fine, I did discover that rabbits (as in the furry long ear type) find power cords to be quite tasty (long story) needless to say there has been a few upgrades and changes to the equipment, will try and get some updated pictures soon, that nem from Marie was absolutely huge today, don't think it was happy with the warmer temperatures, the Clarkki's are so nasty the Clown Trigger steers clear, funny to watch.

Have fun! And yes, the 'Nucks have to start playing better. This win one/lose one crap is no fun. Most of the other teams are fighting for a playoff spot and playing with an edge. We don't really have to give-er so much and it's showing in their play. Not to worry though, they'll get it done when they need to.

Well we made it home from our epic weekend LA road trip to some bad news, the Idol was found dead on Sunday morning, kids were devastated as he was the new favorite, no idea what happened, apparently he ate Saturday night with everyone else and was found Sunday laying on the bottom, I looked him over and there is no signs of trauma and they said nobody was bothering him so a little confused and upset as to what happened. :(

very frustrating as all has been going so well with that tank and he seemed to be fitting in fine and eating well, even took extra care with acclimation and introduction, never fails seems it is always the favorite fish or coral that goes first if something isn't right, doing water changes today as the reef is not looking so hot either, looks like the good intentions of my loving wife and the feed extra so they grow lots while he is gone plan didn't exactly pan out, don't know exactly how much went into the reef but the seahorses had way too much. That will teach me for going away and having a good time.

Just a suggestion but whenever I ask someone (a non-reef someone) to feed my tank, I always portion everything. Every day's (dry) food is in a film cannister marked with the day. I don't feed wet while I'm away but those who do usually are feeding cubes so that's already portioned.

This has the added advantage that I can be sure that no days were missed.

I'd like an idol one day (I'll call him Billy...Billy Idol !) but all the stories from those far more experienced than I leave me wondering if it will ever come to be.

Came home from work tonight, 4 dead fish and the rest covered in velvet, WTF, everyone was fine last night and there has been no changes to the routine in 2 years, no recent additions and no warning to the pending disaster. If I suffer a total wipe out tank will be shut down, anyone wanting large pieces of live rock drop me a line, I will leave tank run fallow for a few months to ensure no parasite transfer, watch for the for sale thread, cheers all.

Unlikely, top is covered as is the sump, only thing that goes in is food and I use fresh chopped seafood and pe mysis, same that goes in the other three tanks and they are fine so I don't know, just added some fresh carbon and changed out the bulbs on the uv sterilizers, don't have the ability to quarantine due to size and number of fish and don't like to medicate the display (not that I could afford to medicate 1000 gallons) so it's a waiting game now, garlic in the food, cleaner wrasse working ot and fingers crossed.

just added some fresh carbon and changed out the bulbs on the uv sterilizers

Sorry to hear about your situation. :( Here's a bit of a long shot...adding carbon and new UV bulbs around the same could have caused enough changes in the water to stress the fish. Not much you can do about it now, but hope for the best. If it really is marine velvet though, you're probably hooped. :(

Only lost two last night but the rest are looking rough, the snapper still has a great appetite, he has eaten 6 clowns, 4 chromis and my mated pair of royal grammas in the last 24 hours, guess they were getting too week to outrun him, that it the one fish I won't miss but my luck is he will be the sole survivor. I felt like this was a good read... this may be what happened to your Idol...
Some general information on Velvet (http://www.liveaquaria.com/general/general.cfm?general_pagesid=83)
It may have been in your tank and when you added the Idol (after having been bounced around from tank to tank for a couple months and been kinda stressed) it gets introduced to your tank that may have had velvet in the tank but the fish are okay with it cause it's not too bad or the fish had it but it wasn't too bad, but the Idol got stressed. It comes in gets the Velvet/loses the battle and you get a huge explosion of dinospores with the added stress of the new tank mate, Velvet outbreak... Just my 2 cents, because you seemed concerned that nothing had changed in a long time but this still happened, I though you might appreciate another view.

From another site "diatomaceous earth filters may also be economically employed to control this parasitic disease" It kills them in the tomont stage. Or a 50 micron filter...

I doubt I would sell the tank, limited market for something this big and everybody would want it for nothing, If I have a total wipeout I will leave it alone for a few months before making any decision to tear down or restock. I do have a very nice blue face angel that was bought as a tiny juvi to replace the one I lost last year that is fat and happy in a 90 that will require a larger home at some point, Here's hoping for a monster tax return, there was at least 4 k worth of fish in there.

I'm sort of confused how that's even possible unless rates change. I mean, usage is usage .. no? Although with that said, I find the utility companies always find a way to get you at first. For example I just signed up for a lower rate and to compensate for that they billed me at almost twice the normal billing period so I still had to fork over a sizable chunk of cash. That said the next bill should be pretty nice! Hope so for you too. I just don't see how that they could even try to get away with such an increase unless they claim your usage has gone up (or your rates). Good luck!

I don't understand it either, when they switched from the analog to digital (before the smart meter) my next bill was more than double and nothing had changed in the house, I even bought one of those plug in meters that you plug your stuff into to calculate usage, spent months tracking just about everything in the house looking for something that was sucking more power than it was supposed too and spent a fortune switching all my light bulbs to power compacts and LED, I wouldn't be so concerned if I was spending time in the shop or something, but I haven't done anything in the shop since October. Hopefully it's a glitch with the meter ( or meter reader) and it balances out with the next bill.

My last bill (power and water) was $550.00 usually it's $340.00 and that's just for one month  power was at 15 cents per kwh  I've switched to enmax (starts next month) which is 8 cents per kwh so my bill should be less.

I'd be out of the hobby asap if my bills were ever anywhere near that high.

We switched to that Enmax EasyMax thingy right when I powered up the new tank to lock in at a decent rate. I'm not really in charge of bills but my wife told me she barely saw any difference in our consumption since so it must be working in our favour.

I've had at least 1 tank running continuous for the last 32 years, might consider downsizing if the next bill is this high, we are a 1 income family and I am off recovering from elbow surgery for at least another month, family first and they just might be having Unicorn Tang sandwiches for lunch!

For those of you who don't know about the stupid meters in BC (I am visiting here right now, and just learned), they are called "Smart" meters. The basic concept is they charge you on a 2 tier system - they charge your more during YOUR INDIVIDUAL PEAK usage times, and less during your off times.

This is so pathetic, because even if you use the most energy at 2:00am (cheap energy for the company to produce), they will charge you at your peak rate.

I am so glad this isnt in Calgary...

Also, bills here are done on a 2 month cycle - but that is still $450 / month (not including water, garbage, sewer, recycling).... shiiieettt!!!!!!!!

I hope you keep this bad boy going - not to often you see people with kahunas big enough to pull it off!

Good luck!

I wouldn't wait for the next bill, personally I'd be on the phone asap!!

What cuz said! I'm still on the old analog meter but my last bill was 3 times higher than normal due to the meter reading person making an error! I checked the numbers & it didn't look right. Used the BC Hydro web page to email my concern, but no response next day so I got on the phone. They were actually quite helpful, had me go out to the meter and give them the numbers over the phone. Adjusted my bill & sent a new one electronically within 24 hours.

I posted about this on page 2 of this thread, but never got around to posting the resolution to the issue so I thought I'd do it here. Get on the phone man:

My guess is the heaters, even with the tank and sump covered I still need to heat 900 gallons (on this tank alone) and then there is another 500 gal between the other two.

I would suggest you try to heat the room as best as possible to keep it around 78 degrees. Generally, large heaters (like furnaces) are much cheaper to run than small heaters (like aquarium heaters). Things like large air pumps and dehumidifiers can be much more energy efficient than aquarium heaters, and put out a lot of heat into the room.

For example, you could use a large air pump like a Coralife Super Luft 65 which uses 66 watts and has more than enough gusto to mix your large saltwater mixing tubs and it would heat a small room quite well too. I'm not sure how you have everything set up though, maybe heating the room isn't an option.

I still love it, but no matter what I do to it now it will never be what it once was, kinda depressing to see it without the big angels, fish of that quality and size are nearly impossible to find. I considered switching it to fresh water and getting some nice large koi or something but im just not seeing it.

So was this shut down because of the hydro consumption or did I miss something here?

I'm confused too.. I thought the tank was still running? No?

Not shut down, it's still running, just looks pathetic with only 2 clownfish and a sailfin tank swimming around, cost to replace the large angels is not feasible right now, time for it to find a new home.
