i do owe thanks to Greg for that one thought.
Ya, When I saw that thing at Greg's place, I thought it was the greatest thing ever! I still haven't gotten one of them yet though, anyone know the best place to get one?

she settled in nicely to the bottom of the tank, going to mount all the new pieces in a few mintues.
nice green coming out, and the polyps are red. pics will follow.
I seen john add a coral one day to his tank, he has this big lit magnifier glass.
He inspects each inch of the coral.
 I do this too. I put new frags/corals in the sand near the glass so I can inspect them everyday for a week before I move them into their new spots. Can't be too careful. :D
the setosa is so insnae in person, pics cant justify.

Ya, I have seen a few Setosas in person, and they are gorgeous. I haven't seen that vibrant color or another corals before. I really should order one for myself. Maybe a Christmas present. :D
Oh, that fooser's frag isn't in your tank?! I thought you just got it from him. I wonder where he got it from?

You have great colors. Are you on the full Zeo system? Which additives are you using?
lobsterboy
10-23-2009, 02:09 AM
yeah full zeo, but have been cutting back on the dose now for about a month, and still the colors have kept up and a few colonies have showed improvement.
i am using pretty much everything, depends the day or even the month.
the only thing i am not using is coral snow.

I'm receiving a bunch more Zeo products next month. After that there won't be much I'm missing. Except the zeolites, and all that come with that. The colors on my LPS are great, but my SPS are still lacking. I think once I get my sump (and thus skimmer) running it will help. I have added one product at a time, and watched for changes. There are a couple products that I don't think do much (not in my tank anyway), and a couple that are quite dramatic. Spur2 sure is dramatic. Do you use that one? How much/how often? I use 1.75 mL every 18 days or so.
Why not Coral Snow?

havent spured in a month, i really want to but i am holding off, as the colors are really coming out with that xtra bit of zo-algae in their tissue.
i was doing 2ml per 14 days. per 125
once you get the zeolites going, they will start to clear up your water of nutrients, and you will have more color in your SPS, when i first started my LPS didnt really like the zeo, i talked them about it and then they liked it, haha. only three LPS in my tank, 2 fungia and a acan from Scott.
I have a rack in my sump that could hold Zeolites, and I think I might try that out, but I don't have any intentions of getting the reactor.
My tank as it sits has about 70-75 gallons total volume after displacement, and the overflow box. So obviously you have lower nutrients than I do (big surprise) since you have to use less Spur2. I have noticed that dosing the Spur2 makes them drop a lot of color (all colors, the nice ones and the browns), but when they get the color back it has less and less brown, and more and more pretty colors than the last time. It also affects some corals more than others. I'm assuming it does that for you as well? Very interesting product. I wonder how it works...
Why don't you use Coral Snow? Does it have an adverse affect for you?

yeah you cold use the zeolites in your sump, most important thing is to keep the flow rate at 80-100gph though these as too much flow will cause problems as the nutrients are too quickly removed.
and yeah, i have found the colors to be more and more intense with contiuned use. and its true that some odd corals are not effected by this, i thought they were from indo, not 100% so dont quote me on that. its something to do with those certain corals from that area dont want to release there excess zoo alage so readily.
not sure how it works, i am guessing it agitates the coral enough for it to purge the excess.
I think the rack would have too much flow then at about 200 gph. I do have a spare PhosBan reactor though...

I have heard of people doing it this way on nano's but you need to agitate the zeo rocks. Make sure you leave enough slack in the line so you can shake the reactor if you use a phosban.

yeah, i had did the phos RX before, and it worked well, i think it was chowder that had a DIY post for this kind of RX.
mine worked well, only thing was it was hard to start the primeing of RX as well, when i glued it, i didnt put a sleave inside the RX for the zeolites, and they would always get wedged inbetween the red plastic bottom and the side of the RX when priming.

I'm sure he doesn't want to!! Kinda of a rude question...? Anyone with some reefing experience has a pretty good idea of the cost of these tanks. If you're wondering what the cost is because you are wanting to plan a setup of your own, then a PM to someone with a tank you really like would be a good place to start. Some of us are good at getting deals though. :D

well what i really meant was from before to now, obvious with such growth, the value of the tank has increased, it was more an appreciation of his work
not really meant for it to be rude

so recently i had some set backs with my equipment. and live stock.
so i get up yesterday morning at 5am to head to work, i always take a peek at the tank before i leave, even with the lights off. and i see my yellow tang which i have had for 5years stuck to the side of the vortech lifeless.
RIP buddy.
pic from better times
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr329/lobsterboy1000/WindowsPhotoGalleryWallpaper.jpg
while still feeling down, i was vonurable to all the new fish at Red Coral and came home with a fat purple tang, Kevin had 6 in stock and they were all eating like pigs and looked like it.
he was welcomed by my tomi tang, which soon left him alone. and yes thats a huge bubble algae growing out of the birdnest.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr329/lobsterboy1000/IMG_2157.jpg
so already it wasnt the best start of the day, so after work, at 9pm
i decided to replace the two new 10k lamps that i got from Red Coral.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr329/lobsterboy1000/IMG_2129.jpg
i then thought it would be a perfect time to clean the acrylic cover so i go to get the vinager, when i trip on the leg of the fixture and snap it back breaking the leg, i was flippin last night.
this is what got cracked.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr329/lobsterboy1000/IMG_2143.jpg
i tried glueing it by clamping it down,
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr329/lobsterboy1000/IMG_2154.jpg
then buffing out the xtra glue, it was 2:30am when i finally got it back onto the fixture, what a sigh of relief i thought as i pushed it back to line it up when i hear *CRACK* it broke again, i set the fixture on the coffee table to deal with in the morning.
which i did, by going to a big box aquarium store and finding the last pair of replacment legs. this issue was solved.
but while waiting for the glue to harden post breaking the leg, the top of the tank was wide open, so i took the opp to take a top down pic.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr329/lobsterboy1000/IMG_2114.jpg
naked tank
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr329/lobsterboy1000/IMG_2148.jpg
i also took the opp to clean my vortech, which needed a good cleaning.
i took some of the algae of it, and put it back in the tank, then it doesnt want to start, just giving spurts of on and off, so i take it out take the back plate off, and there was a black bump, i thought it was some kinda crazy sponge that liked to be spun around and around, then i tried to take it off, and what comes out is black oxidized iron (i am guessing) and it was eating away at the black of the disk. so the wet side is shot.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr329/lobsterboy1000/IMG_2135.jpg
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr329/lobsterboy1000/IMG_2134.jpg
then i go to Red Coral in the late morning, and Kevin hooks me up with a replacement part, and i get it home and still doesnt work. i go back to red coral and Kevin tested different scenerios of the pump, long story short its shot. Kevin was awesome as he lent me the stores vortech until the new mp40 will arrive, which will be in a few weeks.
thanks Kevin. tank is up and running again
so it was a great day off today, i got to go the red coral 3 times in the last two days, and i got to spend sometime with the tank, as well a new fish.
good times.

Wasn't that one of the primary problems with the wetsides fo the Gen1's? The uncoated magnet often led to the failure of the pumps. Good to see you're having that sorted out though.
Do you really replace your bulbs every three months? - did I read that correctly?

Previous to this I saw 6 months once, and I though that was crazy. I also thought the general consensus was 1 year (depending on quality of bulbs) - mine burned out sooner (damn Current USA 18" bulbs), but \I have a PAR meter to monitor my bulb life.

Yes, the blubs get changed out, 2.5-3 months.
i had orginally planned to change them out every 6, but i wanted to see if there was a difference after 3. and to the eye the tank looked more bright and a hint of blue after changing them out early. it kinda stuck on me.

What's your reasoning on the 3 months (if indeed that is correct)?
yup, 3 months, i have had good results with them thus far, so its kinda hard to change now. maybe in a new system, i would try to go further, and see what happens, but for now i will contiune to change them out, 2.5 -3 months.
and for those who have asked. my friend Scott comes by every 2.5-3 months, to pick up the blubs and trade frags.
thanks everyone.

SO, I recently did some work the left side of my tank. re aquascaped.
and I picked up this wicked pink stylo at Red Coral today, it was pretty hard to choose just one colony there, as there was a ton of awesome SPS to choose from, bright colors and very nice sizes. and they had alot of SPS frags in their back tank as well. some cool stuff there for sure.
heres the stylo getting a dip, and that color is under day light.

yeah its looks pretty cool under the lights, i do have similar piece of this as well in my tank , and it came out with blue polyps.
i really hope this piece has pink polyps.
I am playing with the dosing of stylo, pocci glow to see if i can take out the blue on my older piece.

so i recently did some work on the left hand side of my tank, the green stags were getting O.O.C. (out of control)
I donated the stags to a reefing friend that recently lost his massive colony of birdnest to help fill out his tank again. I did keep a few clipping for my self
I am sure in the near future, i will have to remove some more pieces as everything is very close together. I have gone through phases where i like one coral more than the other, but the one variety of SPS i love the most is the stylo, poccis.
when I do reaquascape there will be more of these clustering corals in my tank.
so here are some mixed pics.
after the colonies removed, very messy

How does the pink stylo grow for you? Just curious as I always found mine (when I had one) to be agonizingly slow growing.
LOVE that pink though.

Hey Tony,
I do find them to be a bit slow, which is good for me as I really like there colors and shapes.
I think there is an exception to the slow growing part, this would be Coral Masters rainbow stylo. I had gotten a frag of it awhile ago and its now a small colony, very fast growing and very cool colors.

even with the large colonies removed, i still had even coral to fill in the gaps. hehe.
i did not change my lighting yet, i am still debating on what to do, as there are very few 72inch t5 fixtures, lots with MH combos, but I think am going to stick with the t5s.
I did think about trying to add a fixture to this, but even this is a bit difficult as it has to be a certain width, and everything i am finding is either 4 or 5 inchs to wide.
and i think if i add a center brace it will take away from the open top look. the reason for the center brace would be so i can add 2, 3ft t5 fixtures/

Hey John,
Have you considered a 60 inch T5, you'll just lose 6 inches per side, you can keep lower light SPS on the ends of you tank?

hey Stacey, i did think on getting one of those fixtures, but its the hanging factor of the light, i cant hang and its too much trobule to go out and try to rig it up with what i have right now.
i do know that when i have a new system, it will be one of these fixtures.
the pink, i really like it. the polyps have stayed pink thus far.
for those following my blub selection, i have played around with the d&d actinc plus, the colors really poped in the tank, very nice blub, as well, i tried a the d&d pure actinic, these blubs were insane, the colors of the corals were unreal. they didnt even look like my tank.
i am waiting for the new "super blue" from KZ, they should be in town come some time january. so i will be switching over. i am waiting to hear back from Thomas and Regina of KZ, to see what the ratio of blubs is to, new gens, fiji;s and coral light is.

You're correct about the PM, one drawback is the hanging, plus they are heavy so one needs something very sturdy.
Do you have a link for the KZ Super Blue? I hope they send over some 80W, as there is very little selection available and no suppliers here in Canada for 80W, I have to get my bulbs shipped from reefgeek in CA

it is more intresting, you can get different colors and differnt shapes with the LPS, and with the torches and hammers more movement.
I would love to have a tank just with hammers and torches and a wavebox that would be cool.

I have used MH in the past, acutally those are the lighting that is in the very very first pic of this thread. one blub on the right hand side was burnt out.
I switched to t5s, and havent looked back. And if i started a new system, I would probably go with 2 of the 3ft 8 blub ATI fixtures with the a mix of
2 actinc plus,2 new gen 14k,2 coral light 10k,2 and fiji purple on each fixture.

Hey Canreefers, hope everyone is having some good holidays and getting ready for the boxing day LFS specials.
I am enjoying some time off work now as the restraunt is closed for a few days now.
Dez (Des) was down from edmonton and had the chance to drop by my place to check out the tank after a bit we hit up golds as they got some new SPS in. i picked up a few cool pieces, 2 monits a purple and green  and a baby blue stag, i will post pics in the next little while.
along with (fingers crossed) a pic of the crab or shrimp that i am trying to catch, so i got a pyrex measuring cup and i placed it in the tank along with two reef discs with some nori and crushed dry food and a few pieces of brine shrimp sandwiched in the middle. its in the tank now, and the lights are off, so well see if there is a catch in the morning.

thanks Greg, yup, i use a filter sock to catch what ever is loose in the water, the sock i use is pretty fine so it gets mucked up after abit so i do change frequently.
and carbon is used to remove impurties from the water. like a britta water filter carbon does.

so i picked up a TDS meter today, and i tested my tap water, and it came out to be 160-165. i am guessing its not the best or the worst.
so after starting up a few RODI threads, and then bailing on the idea, I got one put aside at red coral for me for thursday pick up.
It will be another week before i have to do a water change, so i guess well see.

I use one of these in my RO/DI reservoir in the basement.

Does a good job of cutting the water. Although, I wouldn't rely on it 100% of the time. If you know you don't need to make RO/DI for a period of time, it is best to completely shut off the supply water to the RO/DI. This will prolong the life of the filters.

+1. Use the float valve shutoff as a flood preventer when filling a reservoir, but don't use a float valve shutoff kit to regulate the RO/DI full-time. That's a lesson I needed 3 RO membranes to learn.

Why not?
albert_dao

Why not?
Because I don't buy into "stripped water" anecdotes. If he is currently a successful Zeovit user, his water will already be "stripped" or whatever ambiguous state the armchair elite would like to call it. In recent memory, I can recall a similar accusation pointed towards high efficiency skimmers. As we all know, current skimmer technology succeeds previous incarnations by a long shot. The result? Better, cleaner tanks with healthier livestock.
The key here is to keep things as stable as possible. Reducing supplementation of carbon sources or media beds will have a larger negative impact on a stable system than simply switching to water that should have been used to begin with.
Let's put it this way; don't fix what isn't broken, and this isn't broken :D

That's the issue here - it's not just reducing the supplementation of organic carbon or whatever other zeovit additives that is going to have the negative impact, but the sudden change in overall nutrient availability. You're going from a nutrient rich (tap water) to a nutrient poor (RO/DI) state before bacterial/skimmer/nutrient export processing. Like any balanced equation, if you take one term out (in this the extra nutrients in the water) you're going to have a deviation from equillibrium.
And, I'm quite active. I don't even own an arm chair.

I agree with albert on this. Zeo's job is to "strip" the water as you guys are calling it. The zeo products then introduct their own nutrients to the coral via dosing. If anything John should see better results with a cleaner starting point. (Zero TDS)

Yes, and for that reason, Lobsterboy will probably have to tone back the Zeo. The zeo system removes nutrients from the water - including the very ones you add into the system. If he has a lot less nutrients from the water, the zeo is going to be removing a lot more of the nutrients that are deliberately introduced.
Hence you have two options, start adding a lot more zeo additives to replace those that are not being introduced any longer, or tone back a bit on the zeo as there is less nutrient load to be removed.
fooser
01-28-2010, 12:06 AM
I also must agree with Albert. I have been researching on zeo a little for my new build and from what I know about zeo, it cleans out the water column and then gives the corals what they need through facilitation of other supplemental products. It takes what they don't need and gives back what they do need. Corals get enough nutrients from the zeo dosing that they no longer need to work as hard producing food during the day and use polyp extention to capture any other additional nutrients from the water column. Because they save so much energy through zeo nutrients, polyp extention increases noticeably.
Never the less, I am sure different tanks may have different results and effects from changing things up suddenly. I am sure John will know if his tank is affected adversely or not when he monitors his corals. He can always make slight adjustments if the needs arise.
Anyways... good purchase John! I will be looking into one of those in the next few months. Let me know if you see a noticeable difference in your tank with that RO unit. Can't wait til you come by again to pick up your pocci, and check out the new system! Post some pics when the changes pop up in your corals!

Tanks looking awesome Jon!
Adding onto the whole switching to RO water and being worried about the zeo. I highly doubt he would be changing all of his tanks water at once. so lets say going with a 5-10% water change it will take quite a while for the tank to actually be 100% ro water

hey everyone, i had the day off today, which was awesome, Scott dropped off a wicked pocci colony to me, and then i met up with 24 storm and his new ride, a sick ace corvette, we hit up the local shops here, seen Kevin, Doug, and carmen and Brad and his wife at Red Coral, and picked up a few things for the teatro tank. (which will hopefully be updated today sometime) then oceans, big als, and golds.
I did have plans to do a major reno aquascape on my tank, but in the end, time was the major player, i just dont have that much right now, so this wil have to wait. A few colonies were traded off, and things got moved around a touch to try and increase flow, which I was successful in doing. all levels are where they should, as i was having a hard time with MG a few weeks ago.
also had the time to take some pics of my own tank as well as the teatro tank.

Ooh.. New tank!! Exciting! I really do need to come see your existing tank before it is gone. Man, is Calgary like the only major city that doesn't do tank tours???
We used to all the time! Geeez, you young newcomers think you're so everything. :p All it takes is for someone to organize one ....

Any ideas on what lighting system you will be running on the new tank John? Can't wait to see the tank built, that's going to be one amazing looking SPS tank considering the last one.
How do you plan on keeping your levels constant? Any reactors or dosers in the mix yet?

I am looking at the line of ATI fixtures, the new light will be for sure T5;s.
for the start up of the build and following willl be dosed the same ol way i have been doin. Seachem CA in the morning, Seachem KH at night.
A doser might be a good idea, but not sure yet. As its beenig planned out, but I will not know the total aspect of things until the tank and stand get here.
I hope I can live up to all these expections. One thing the new tank will be, less is more.

i picked up some rod for the new rock work, i always said the next tank will not be a leaning tower of SPS.
I also did a huge move today to bring some of the colonies, (hahaha) to a friends tank. We got it all in, and i took pics along the way.
