Think its time to change the filter.

Its from a friends deep well system. Not sure if its just sludge but looks like rust. Whatcha think.

Not sure. Will ask him. Something along the lines of my thoughts. At least its in the filter and not on the other side. Plus the softener he put in has a pre filter system.

Also suggested they shorten up the filter change interval.

If it is iron bacteria, there is not alot you can do but shock the well. If there is a small amount of iron getting through, the softener will take it out (I believe a max of 3 ppm.) Check the tanks of the toilets, if there is alot of iron bacteria it will show up as a brown slimy goo inside the tank. I am in Calgary right now, I will check my books whwn i go back home tomorrow.

you could start dosing that stuff at 3ml a day and it should have the same effect as Zeo

Thanks. Not sure but think the big softener theye installed will remove up to 5ppm but of course thats just a rating. I will ask him to look inside the toilet tanks. I know when they purchased the place, it had no filtration on the well, so the systems were getting raw well water before and there are likely iron stains still from that. They have replaced most of the taps and so on.

When I was on a well, my large particulate filter, {same model}, had a lot of crap and sludge in it at change time but never red like theirs.

If it is not iron bacteria and just iron it will depend on if it is ferrous or ferric iron in the water. An water softener will only take out ferric iron, if it is ferrous he may need a chlorine injector or a chemical free iron filter to get rid of the iron. It sounds like ferrous if there are stains on the fixtures and trim. The iron is oxidizing as it comes into contact with the air, turning it to ferric iron and staining. Just my thoughts.
