Just a basic return atan average height from a sump to a tank.

Mag drives are nice and cheap and impellers can be found easily.
Eheims are excellent but more $$$.

You can't go wrong with those German built Eheims.

I voted mag drive because I don't have experience with the others. Mag drives are pretty bullet proof IMO.
I currently run a Mag12 of my tank and find it too loud.
Id probably go with anything that would be quieter and reliable.

Hmm, I have a MAG 12 also and it's virtually silent. Maybe try a new impeller?

I use Ocean Runners for my return and skimmer. I find them to be pretty quite.

I run a Mag 950 on a 1.5" return from my sump. While quiet, I think it could be quieter. In particular, I get a hum that I think is transmitting throught the bottom glass pane of the sump and then my hardwood floors. I have a piece of foam under it, but it doens't help much. Heat transfer doesn't seem to bad (but then again, it's a small pump).
Has anyone tried Oase sumbmersible pumps?

try hanging the pump from the hose, suspend it so it doesn't touch anything with string or i have use that surgical tubing you can get from Rona. Worked for me when i needed it.

Interesting idea! I hadn't thought of that. I'll give it a try this weekend. Thanks.
