I did not intend to start a cyber riot with the original question,but merely wished some more leeway in the topics discussed.

Rather than just closing the thread,or telling people "to go elswhere then" why not invite more to vote on the matter,and decide accordingly?

Hi all.

I think the way that everything was handled was fine. The original message was not deleted. This means that everyone can read it and respond to the poster by Email. At the same time, the thread was closed so that no further off-topic replies would clutter the board. It was a fair compromise on both sides I thought.

In my opinion, it is easy now to get off topic and not have the board suffer because this board is currently small and traffic is light. However, in larger boards, off topic posts waste a lot of time for people who only want to read about the topics at hand. As members grow, there will always be groups with similar interests. It won't be long before people start talking about cars, computer games, computer viruses, Canucks, wars, night clubs, jokes, beautiful women, or what have you.

PS: I don't agree that people have their time wasted on the larger boards in off topic areas because you choose to go there. If you don't want to read all that crap you just don't enter the forum. I used to spend quite a bit of time reading the lounges on the big boards and got quite a few good laughs. I no longer do because I started frothing at the mouth, wanted to tear peoples hearts out and most of them were to far away to get my hands on images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif .

Troy, you're right. If all of the off-topic posts are in a single forum, people can easily choose not to go there.

I guess I was thinking of the times when I see off-topic posts in the wrong forums on other message boards.

I guess there's no harm other than the time it takes for moderators to read everything.
