You know what I think. Correct spelling is important to me because when I read something spelling errors jump off the page at me. That is not voluntary, it is just the way I am. For example I was at Sears the other day and noticed they had a Laudnry Centre on sale. Nobody but me had noticed the error. I also have a preconceived opinion of the person who makes these errors. That is also the way I am built. In my way of thinking it takes very little effort to read over one's post before hitting the "submit" button. I also hate the BB shortcuts such as U for you etc. To me that is just lazyness. Now a quick leap off my soapbox.

As far as I'm concerned spelling doesn't count as long as the idea is conveyed.
It really takes the wind out of someone’s sails that is asking for help or giving good advise when the next poster corrects language.

what good is reading it over going to do if you don't know how to spell it in the first place. Also your preconceived opinion of people that make spelling mistakes is pretty lame. Do you take account people that have serious dyslexia and other factors?

The opinion I have is an atomatic response. When I read something I have no idea the writer has dyslexia. If the writer tells me he has dyslexia I make allowances for that. There is something else I would say. I like to use smilies. The reader might look at the smily to see if someone is serious or merely razzing him.

Did you go right to the top and contact the Sears CEO and get that spelling error dealt with?
Also, did you ever think that there might be a preconceived opinion of those that point out these minor errors?
Now I ask this.
If I put Fiji rock in my refugium, does it become Fugi rock? Or does the refugium become a refijium!

I do care about spelling and poor grammar; although, I have to admit sometimes I have posted a reply without double-checking, especially when I'm not wearing my contacts  .
What bothers me is that today's kids are not being pushed to learn to spell properly & this will become a life-long habit that they bring into the work-force. An over-reliance on Spell-check & chatting contribute to this problem. I should know since kids who spend too many hours "chatting" provide me with a lot of business as a tutor.
Just my $.02.

That's exactly it. Frankly I don't give an Amphiprion percula's ass about most of the spelling and grammatical errors on this board, which we all know sometimes prohibits efficient communication (you know it's bad when a poor speller complains about someone else's poor spelling; then again, I like big words and in the past people have complained about this being inefficient because they're too lazy to use a dictionary  ). But Fiji is a place. This is like me asking someone if they live in Surray or how the weather is in Winnepeg (probably crap). I seriously wonder how many reefers think the place actually is "Figi", considering how prevalent the misspelling is...

I find grammatical errors difficult and annoying to read. While an honest mistake or typo should be skimmed over and forgotten an obvious misunderstanding of the subject matter (Mount Fuji rock in a reef tank) or the written English language (are instead of our) deserves a correction, or at least an explanation. Personally, I would rather know when I make a mistake, hopefully I will be able to learn from it.
To not do a quick proofread of your post shows a disregard for those you are writing to.

yeah, i find spelling and grammatical errors annoying...on an internet forum, not so much.
as someone already mentioned, sure some things warrant pointing out, like fuji for instance, since it is an easily correctable mistake, and something that is directly related to this hobby, but i figure as long as the posters idea is conveyed easily, then it's all good.
what really picks my butt is when i try to read someones post that is really really long and is written without any punctuation whatsoever so it is just this one super duper long run on sentance that it actaully looks like some kinda legal document i mean come on how hard is it to throw in a few punctuation marks or to even just hit the enter button to space things out a bit and seperate some of the main ideas behind the post it really does make a big difference as to how easy it would be to read so i dont lose my place in the paragraph it would really help me to help you thanks much appreciated

I honestly voted, but I agree with Tony in that the poll is not accurate. Misspellings make me mildly annoyed, but I won't lose a minute's sleep because of them. I do, however, thank you very much Brad for the opportunity to do a great deal of post padding.
yeah, i find spelling and grammatical errors annoying...on an internet forum, not so much.
as someone already mentioned, sure some things warrant pointing out, like fuji for instance, since it is an easily correctable mistake, and something that is directly related to this hobby, but i figure as long as the posters idea is conveyed easily, then it's all good.
what really picks my butt is when i try to read someones post that is really really long and is written without any punctuation whatsoever so it is just this one super duper long run on sentance that it actaully looks like some kinda legal document i mean come on how hard is it to throw in a few punctuation marks or to even just hit the enter button to space things out a bit and seperate some of the main ideas behind the post it really does make a big difference as to how easy it would be to read so i dont lose my place in the paragraph it would really help me to help you thanks much appreciated

In my opinion the guy that corrects the mistake angers me more than the guy that makes the mistake. When someone corrects my spelling I make a point to spell everything absolutely wrong from there on out.

Personally I'm an internet bully :) I like to abuse anyone for the slightest mistake... :onfire:
I'm kiddin! I just like padding my post count in the least useful method possible!!!

Wow if this isn't a waste of time i dont know what is. Doesn't everyone have a fish tank they can be caring for instead of debating spelling errors, or the correct way to spell Fuji.

If you don't want to waste time by taking part in this discussion, you don't have to.

After almost 100 posts on this thread, what are we talking about?
This is the lounge, right, so that means people come here when they don't have more important things to do, like water changes

Issues with control?
Issues with control?
That's it! You hit the nail right on the head!
People that constantly correct other people for spelling and so on, feel like they're in control and more intelligent than others when they correct them.
Thanks for helping me to realize this!

Shawn, I can't tell when you're trying to spell poorly and when it's accidental/careless...
And Quinn, I think you could be a little less clear with your points...
