My response is 11 years late. But in case someone comes across this page I thought I would respond.

The reason my DIY skimmer is so dirty is because it became extremely difficult for me to manage looking after the system I had at the time due to a medical condition. It effected me so badly that I eventually had to sell off my entire system.
