Hi all, Is there a rule of thumb for haw much sand to put in a tank? Like 1lb/gal or is it just whatever works for the kind of reef you want?

Just whatever works, from none to several inches. Most people these days go with shallower beds.

There is a sand calculator on Reef Central I think. If not, Google "reef sand calculator". It will tell you how many lbs for the dimensions and desired depth. I like less than 1".

Default sand

a level sand bed won't matter after a while-especially if you have wrasses,my sand bed is anywhere from 2 inches to about 8 inches
