Default closed loop and wavemakers

For a closed loop system is a wavemaker necessary?

Depends on the system, what size is the tank?
Check out this closed loop, great idea.

Have just a CL on mine, no wavemaker but am running a OM4-way.

Take a look at Oceans Motions WaterPix forum. Even if not planning on using a OM product, loads of CL pictures for ideas.
