Depends how fancy you want to go. Your local plumbing supplier will have all the sched 40 stuff. Sched 80 is WAY overkill for our hobby, but looks cool. If you want coloured pipe and fittings, then you'll have to go with BRS or Formufit out of the States.

For basic common stuff Home Depot works fine and it is really convenient especially if you know what you want. Parts are there right in front of you you can play with them for as long as you want.

You do not to go to a counter and order a part from a catalog hoping to get the right part.

Home depot has a very limited selection at a lot of their stores, I only ever try to find something there if it's an emergency or they are the only place that is close by. I would reccomend finding a swimming pool or plumbing supply store.

I have found home depot has a good selection of schedule 40 fittings for 1/2" through to 1" for common things, elbows, tees, ball union valves, couplers and unions. If you need other parts or different sizes you have to go elsewhere.
They tend to have the best selection in the spring. Prices are reasonable.
