Default Return Pump suggestion

75 Gal display
40 Gal Sump

The sump will be in the stand underneath the display.

I was thinking about a Mag 9 return.

Is this a good option or would you pick up something else?

I just picked up an Eheim Universal 1262, nice pump.
Pump Output: 900 gph

Nice and quiet someone told me the Mag 9's are noisy

I agree with Eheim, Mags are noisy and run warm.

I also like the Eheim. If you aren't going to use the return to run any reactors or anything else you could go with the Eheim 1260 (65 watts). If you want some extra flow for reactors or a refugium you would want the Eheim 1262 (80 watts).

Another one to check out is the Eheim Compact line. They have a cheaper build quality, but seem to still be a quality pump, and the are very energy efficient. For the same reasons as above, choose either the Compact 2000 (31 watts), or the Compact 3000 (60 watts). I have a Compact 1000 and a 2000, and they have been running for a few years nice and quiet.

Both the Eheim pumps run quite cool. If your tank is in the basement and has LED lights, then using a return pump that adds heat can be an efficient way to help heat your tank (heaters are energy hogs). If that's the case, check out the Quiet One pumps. They aren't as quiet as the name suggests, but they are reasonable, and certainly quieter than a Mag pump.

I'll vouch for the eheim 1262 as well. I have one on my 93 and it works great. Fairly quiet and has been reliable for the past 2 or 3 years.

Another +1 on the Eheim 1262, it was what I used when I had a 75g/20g sump setup and it performed nicely.

Currently with a 200g+ total volume system I am running a Jebao DCT12000. The verdict is still out since I literally just started it up yesterday but it seems quiet and the flow is good. A bonus is the controller which lets you control the flow at the touch of a button, possibly eliminating the need for a valve. Price-wise it's also very attractive.
