I have a Märklin HO set from my childhood in crates in the basement. Have always planned to set it up again. What's out there these days is amazing, but my set is surely an antique by now. No idea if the engines even work anymore and I need a 110 to 220 volt transformer to power it.

Mine was HO as well but I think I'm going to go with N gauge for my son's layout. To be fair too his twin sister I'm going to build her a doll house.

Depending how old your son is n scale is pretty small and even putting trains on the track can be very difficult for children. Hobby wholesale has both n and ho test tracks set up so maybe bring your boy there to try out n scale first. Lots of free track plans on model railroader.com. Of course if the layout is really for you and you just use the kids as an excuse to buy stuff without the wife complaining like I do then n scale is great for people who like to do models.

Yeah, not sure about N scale, if anything go the other way to G scale or LGB! Lehmann Gross Bahn. You can set it up in your yard! Have it deliver a beer to you at the BBQ.

I don't have a ton of room to dedicate to it. Maybe 24"x12' at it's absolute biggest. It takes a 24" radius in HO in order to run anything he wanted, it would be outside edge to outside edge. He's still pretty young so I have time to collect and stockpile a bunch of things for when he's a tad bigger.

Solutions are easy. The real difficulty lies in discovering the problem.
