What's best skimmer to buy under $500?.

Tank and sump size, what kind of corals, how much live rock, how many and what size fish

JL Aquatics and Reef Supplies are both good and carry a lot of different products from one another. Even when our dollar was on par I still found JL to be cheaper than the US by the time shipping was factored in. They both also have good websites and carry a wide variety of items.

120 gallon tank, 55 gallon sump no fish yet no coral yet, forgot how much the rock weighs lol.

Curve 7 or 9 from bubble magus great skimmers and both under $500 with money left for something else

I asked about these items as it can have a bearing on how much skimmer you need.
No SPS and a small fish load requires a smaller skimmer than a tank packed full of SPS and fish.
If you're not sure, go with the larger-sized suggestions. Then you won't have to upgrade.
To a point, a larger skimmer won't hurt your tank, just your wallet.
