Looks as if this is a viable option.

Yep. I just posted my samples a couple weeks ago. I sent them to the Quebec address this time.

If you do go with this method, after getting the results, just how close to the sample water is the tank water going to be at that time?
I guess you could do some interval testing at the same interval the test results come back, and see how much difference there is and possibly build up a regime to accurately dose for needed elements.
Also, does the Triton method account for removal of a build up of elements that occurs from decomposing food/detritus that are NOT normally consumed in the tank?

I don't use the Triton method, I simply use the testing to check for build up or depletion of microelements. In a mature tank that has consistent care and dosing, I don't think the microelements change much in the 2-3 weeks you wait for results. Heck, they barely change in 6 months.

You can check ion balance from the macroelements. I also use it to double check my test kits. I test everything I have a kit for with every brand I have at the same time I collect the Triton samples - I use this information to perform more accurate testing on my own and choose better test kits. Triton doesn't test KH or NO3 which is unfortunate though.

Which decomposition elements are you referring to? Triton only tests for 32 elements - check their website for a list.

Many years ago on Reef Central, one of the "specialists" (early Randy Holmes-Farley days where they had multiple "expert" forums including a biologist) arranged testing of a lot of tanks from the hobbyists and they found very high levels of many elements. I don't remember which ones specifically. (at my age, it's a given that I don't remember a lot of things)
