Unhappy Problem w/ Leather Finger Coral

Have three that were attached to same rock, were doing good till 3 days ago, now two are being destroyed from the base. I haven't seen any sort of worm or anything but the bases are basically falling apart and all that is left is a pile of what looks like 1/8" long pieces of stiff white thread. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

That same thing happened to my toadstool about 7 months ago. Poof! Just disintegtrated. I never did figure out what caused it but in the end I had to just cut it off at the base before it crashed the tank (it is not growing back from the little bit I left on the rock). If they look like they're circling the drain I'd just rip them out of there before they cause issues for everything else.
