Default Show us some Industry-type pics!

A couple pics of the stack here in Flin Flon. Taken pretty much from the bottom of my stairs.

Hmm Photobucket did a nice job on the resizing. Well now I can add a couple pics to my tank build thread, though there's not much to look at yet.

Flin Flon is one of Canada's largest producers of base metal, mostly zinc and copper, at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting (HBMS). The smoke is from the copper smelter (where they produce blister copper), which is slated to be shut down as of 2012.

Unfortunately, the smelter is one of Canada's worst polluters, number 4 overall in the list of top polluters. Also one of the last copper smelters in Canada, with the others being in Sudbury, ON, and Trail, BC... though I think the one in Trail is closed now.

A small blister copper ingot produced locally...

Besides the smelter, HBMS also runs a zinc pressure leaching plant and produces pharmaceutical grade zinc products... 99.9% pure zinc produced by electroplating. This portion of the operation will likely survive the closure of the smelter, since they are operated independently.

A small high grade zinc ingot...

Thanks for the compliments, I just got this camera for Christmas and am still learning how to use it. Its a Panasonic Lumix FZ8, really an incredible camera.

On a side note, I like taking photos of industrial areas, there's something about all those angles and vapours and rusted metal...

Indeed, the macro is... well, not very macro! You do have to be quite far away for it to be effective, but the pictures are beautiful and the 'scene' mode makes taking great pictures easy. I tend to fiddle with the autofocus a lot, going back and forth from the normal mode to the macro mode... and it's nice that you can set the priority re: aperture or shutter.
