Default Snails eating each other?

Just bought a bunch of astrea from LFS, and by time I got home, about 30 min drive, one of the shell was empty and there were flesh floating in the water with the hard cover for protection. All there was in the bag was astrea and nothing else. Is this possible? Has anyone ran into the same situation before?

I heard from my LFS that astrea polute the water really quick so they usually pack them with no water. So that might be the reason some of your snail died.
