'Dory' warnings in Vancouver Sun and Province

Hi all,

Front page of both the province and the sun had a face many lower mainland reefers will recognise.

Articles which I think are good for our hobby and fish keepers alike.

Hmmm, while he does recommend against it there is still a mention of how big a shipment he is getting in.

It seemed a bit conflicting with how the article was written if they truly wanted to discourage it.

eg, On one hand all the fish you see in stores are wild caught but on the other hand they aren't endangered and are pretty widespread

I did think it was a little odd how he was saying that he doesn't want people to buy them on a whim however he will be ordering in 80 of them.

Otherwise I think any awareness to the general public is good.

I think he is stating not for novice reef keepers and minimum tank size required.

No minimum tank size is listed anywhere in the article that I saw, they didn't even mention how big they can get.

I just feel IF you are trying to educate and dissuade then you don't go saying this place is getting 80-120 fish in and they will cost $89.99, because that is just marketing in the guise of a "caution".

It is a business after all, Dory has been glorified by the movie and it is unfortunate that most business owners try to capitalize on it, I personally don't agree with that kind of practice but it's still a part of our hobby. We are all some what responsible for taking "dory" out of the ocean. I would think warning people not to buy it unless you are experienced is better than the post one of the vendor shared...buy a 65 gallon tank setup and get a free Dory, that just makes my blood boil.

In my experience that store was more eager to make money than do the right thing. When i started out in the hobby i made 2 fish purchases there. First was a Mandarin Dragonet, i told the guy my tank size, asked if it was reef safe and asked what it eats, he said mysis and pellets like most other fish, ummm. Poor thing starved in my tank for a while before a fellow reefer with a proper pod population rescued him.
Second was a Toby Puffer. Same questions same story, it was cute. Is it reef safe? Sure is... Not!
Off to J+L that cute little guy went for credit, i had him for 2 hours max before removing him from the tank with a mouth full of coral.
In hindsight i should've done the research first, impulsive purchases are often mistakes in this hobby.

Koodos to those vendors at least making the recommendation to potential buyers the requirements for them. Just noticed the other day J+L has several life size photos up on the wall of Blue Tangs showing how large they can get
