its a sponge , a filter feeder
 do a google search on ther tupperware method for feeding suncorals and dendros , basically use a tupper ware container or measuring cup filled with tank water and pollute the hell out of it with mysis,planton, pellets etc. float the container in your sump or tank and place the suncorals in there and leave them there for the day , do this a few times and they will swell up and start to feed reguarily, suncorals should be out for most of the time , the longer they are closed the harder it is to coax the out for food once done with the container thow the food into the garbage , now you have a fed suncoral or at least a feeding response and no pollution to your tank what so ever  it works like a charm and can even bring back the worst of them to life a suncoral can be trained to come out at the same time every day for food or even to saty out all day if fed often enough if it helps any the branching yellows are hardest to keep , then the branching orange . the matted yellow and oranges are easier than the branching species are. black branching is the easiest to care for and can go with once a week feedings, however daily is best. once a suncoral loses its stalk color it never regains it back only new growth will be colored hth cheers denny

Ok so it's not a fungus on the side? I'm freaked right out and ready to take the table saw to the whole side of the coral. I feel sick to my stomach thinking this is harming my tank.
I am in the process ( before my husband gets home from work) of making up a bunch of fish food. Cyclo, mysis, clam, squid, garlic etc. I have been feeding each polyp with tweezers daily since I brought it home. It eats and stays open for a few hours afterwards. I really want to find dendro but no fish stores near me have ever had it. Going to have to treck into the city. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I had this type of sponge on some zoas I once received from a fellow reefer it completely covered the zoas and they died. Hopefully this will not happen to you, I personally do not like them they might be good for the tank but I tried to clean a lot of mine off and it kept coming back.

That's my concern as well as that side of the coral has a few dead polyps on it. I scrubbed the coral with a tooth brush before putting it in and I know it wasn't there then(at least not to this extent ) and that was only last Tuesday. So it's grown this much since then.

Oh it grows like wild fire. I to used a tooth brush on a daily basis finally I tossed the whole thing out as I did not want any of that stuff on any of my other rock. The zoas were dead and gone anyways as I could not keep it off them.
