Default Flame Angel

Hi,

Generally speaking, is flame angel reef safe? Thanks.

If u have lots of coral I wouldn’t worry to much. You just gotta try and see at least it looks good if it nips occasionally

Thank you very much for your replies! I actually had a flame angel before, and rarely saw it nipping on corals, but heard other said it will. So, I was curious to know what people experienced here before buying another one.

I’ve had one for about a month, it hasn’t bothered anything in an SPS, LPS tank.

The flame angelfish is considered reef safe… but with caution. because they may nip on your corals or clam mantles in your reef. But the ones that nip are most likely underfed.

If fed properly. They will leave your coral alone. Their like coral beauties that way.

In my opinion it is dependent upon the specific angelfish...one flame may nip right away....and another one may not for months or years...
That being said.... If you have LPS there is a likely chance they will become a snack at some time. It may not happen right away...but eventually it would be a tasty treat for them. Specifically if your keeping pricey fleshy LPS like Acans, brains, flowerpots etc I would advise against it.

The only true really reef safe angels that I have ever kept my experience are the Genicanthus species.

Any fish can break the norms and feed on corals on occasion though. I have had even yellow tangs and blennies nip on coral and clams in the past.

If I was to stock a reef tank with LPS or SPS again, I would not add an angelfish outside the Genicanthus species.

I've kept flame angels in many of my tanks throughout the years, and have never had any problems with them and my corals (Sps and LPS). I autofeed once daily, and then put a pinch of food here and there (probably 2 times a week).
