Not only the bottom of that chamber but those rocks themselves will start to collect detritus in all their nooks and crannies over time. You will at some point want to clean out that chamber and it will be a nightmare, probably :-)

As a suggestion, what you could use in stead of the rubble are floating dish pads.

Since they float they are less likely to accumulate detritus. At least mine never have. Plus you can easily stick a vacuum in that chamber and vacuum up the accumulated detritus. That is unless accumulated detritus is exactly what you're wanting in that chamber. In which case, carry on :-)

I have the same style rubble zone in both my setups, have yet to clean them out and have almost zero nutrients. Mine are both return pump fed, so they are after the mechanical filters, so that may help. But either way I like these rubble sections.

I guess if you're not neurotic about keeping the floor of your sump clean like I am, then they're fine :-) I try to vacuum out every inch my sump floor during every water change. Probably not necessary though. I have to remind myself that not everyone is as neurotic as I am.

Well I guess your tank always shows the fruits of your labor so you're doing something right!

That's the beauty of this hobby. There's lots of shades of "right" :-) If the rubble zone works for you, then that's "right" as well

It's either rubble or micro algae right? Or both...
