"Thus, Canada, like many other countries, does not require special permits for the importation of aquatic organisms for the aquarium hobbyist."

you don't need CITES for fish or inverts or soft corals.
You do need CITES for Hard Coral (anything with a skeleton) or live rock - or anything made of live rock.
a leather coral is admissible without CITES.
a leather coral on a piece of Live rock is admissible only with CITES.
frags on cement ok. frags on live rock rubble not okay.
despite needing CITES or not, you could still be asked for american fish and wildlife paperwork to export.
typically someone at the border crossing with a couple of fish would be okay.
you cross with a box full..you are probably going to need official paperwork.

another thing, there are some inverts that are cites
an example is some of the conch family
but the run of the mill inverts should not require CITES.

definitely CITES
I should clarify that there are some fish species that are CITES.
seahorses and a few species of shark I believe are as well.
basically, anything that is endangered and super rare is CITES
and ignorance would not be allowable excuse.
best case they would just confiscate it at the border.
worse case - fine or jail time.
normally, when I bring in shipments, all the paperwork is dealt with by the wholesalers I deal with.
however, it probably isn't worth your time or money to legally export out of the states with all of the proper paperwork.
you are looking at typically min 250.00 for the various fees.
and you can't initiate the CITES, it has to be the exporter who initiates the CITES
99.99 of stores will not deal with CITES..only wholesalers which will only sell to business with business licenses.

that only counts in aquacultured also

soft corals "MUST" be on synthetic frags, and fish must be bred in the USA or you require USFW if they are capture and re-exported

Just wait, everything goes up in December too, the CFIA will now require a permit on all imports of fish too now, and certain species will be banned in Canada.

So fish cannot be wild caught, and you have to be able to prove they are aquacultured? yea, good luck for the common joe on a weekend trip. what about.... say zoas on a frag plug? not really worth it at ll.

any soft corals on a plug are ok, you can ship them ups fed ex etc...
but minimal shipping charge is $100, and depending where you live depends on your courier.

Fedex has a hub in Edmonton, UPS has theirs in Calgary.

UPS is a ripoff as they will broker it if you don't live in their hub city.

fish from ORA can be shipped overnight without major issues as they have all the paperwork for importation for you as they CB.

Wild Caught need USFW
