Default Plumbing argument

My fiance insists we can "safely" use ABS pipe or something called Bopex for plumbing our tank and I think it would be better to use pvc pipe as I am cautious. Is there a reason not to use abs or bopex on a tank?

Most powerheads, bulkheads and submersible pumps such as mag pumps are ABS. Not sure what the other stuff is though.

ABS is perfectly safe to use. I just prefer PVC.

I think the reason most people use PVC is that ABS is only available down to 1.5", where PVC goes down much smaller. However PVC is more expensive.

If you do go with ABS, look into cell core. It is ABS but cheaper.

Keep in mind that ABS is not really pressure rated. So if you're going to be running any kind of pressure through it, I strongly reccomend Shedule 40 PVC or for extreme pressure Schedule 80 PVC.

Anyone know anything about this bopex stuff? he is really gung-ho to use it. Says people use it for plumbing and it doesn't require fittings.

I work in plumbing wholesale so I'll see if I can find anything out about it.

You can use ABS to an extent in a tank. When ABS heats to a certain temperature (I think it's 60 or 70 celcius or so) it releases a toxic gas. Usually when using ABS in a tank it's kept to fittings and such. I think that's the reason why PVC is pottable and ABS isn't (pottable meaning safe for drinking water).

With the ammount used on a tank I just use PVC. It's not like you're plumbing an entire house with the stuff
