I thought about de-icing but I figured it would create more ice then it got rid of

Dirty fresh water is an excellent plant fertilizer. I use a 75 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank as a bio-filter for my pond. I put pond plants on an egg-crate shelf inside the filter and they turn into a massive jungle over the season.
