Default carbon filters

I was wondering if anyone uses activated carbon filters in their reefs? What are your thoughts on use? Do you use them intermittently or continueously? Does their use affect trace elements?

I use Black Diamond activated carbon in a Magnum filter about 1 week a month. No adverse effects and cleans up my water.
