To answer your question, yes, spelling is a part of Language Arts. Thankfully the teachers are teaching him how to spell and not me. I just have to make sure he does the prescribed homework and occasionally explaining to him, " That's just how it it is son. I have no idea why there are two g's in aggravated or why that letter is silent."

I can relate! My 1st language was not English either & many of the grammatical conventions & pronunciation of certain words (like "one") made no sense to me. "Won" sounds the same as "One"? Won makes a bit of sense phonetically, but one is really out there. And when I was in school, loooong time ago, the subject was simply "English". Language Arts sounds so much more sophisticated though!
